Rega RS1's reminded me of grados. Maybe if you can find an older R1.

He's looking for <250USD speakers that sound like Grados with a soundstage. As that is a bit optimistic, I thought I'd share a real world alternative. I.e. Grados with a soundstage.

What about DIY? You should be able to find a pair of singledrivers and build cabinets for $250.

Another option you might want to look for are the old ESS AMT speakers. I got a pair of ESS AMT-1s for $300. They're not hugely common, but are seriously underrated and underappreciated. An AMT (air motion transformer) is a killer transducerthat will give you crispness and detail in spades. Being dipoles, they'll give you a ridiculously good soundstage - about as good as it gets.

Their woofers are typical of the 1970s - slow and a little thick. So, not terribly different from Grados except that the AMTs are ruler flat from about 800Hz on up.

They are enjoyable stock, however, it is possible to substitute a flatter, faster modern woofer to better match the AMTs. You can also upgrade the crossovers with modern parts and work over the cabinets with Dynamat. Pt some time and a few hundred more into them, and you will have a speaker that hangs with some of the best on the market.

If you really want to go nuts, you can build new woofer cabinets for a serious upgrade.

I've been thinking about doing something like that. I might pick up a pair of AMTs, then drop them on top of an open baffle dipole woofer arrangemen using the servos sold at Old Colony Sound Lab. That would give you frighteningly tight dipolar bass that could get close to the speed of the AMTs.

Used Energy speakers are not harsh (I've gone thru a lot) and sound terrific for the money. I would not bother with anything but the higher end Klipsch (tried those too). Find some older Energy e:xl-16 (not the e:xl-15) on eBay or any of the newer RC series. You can get most of these for under $200, especially the e:xl line. Check Craigslist too. I got my Thiels for $900 from someone on CL (a nicer deal than eBay since I negotiated him down from $1200).
These will sound great: Energy RC-Mini Bookshelf Speakers ROSENUT 1 pair - eBay (item 290351689017 end time Sep-29-09 21:29:02 PDT)

or

Energy Connoisseur C-2 Bookshelf Speakers - eBay (item 260478819642 end time Sep-24-09 20:40:03 PDT)

Nice!
I doubt the speakers I linked to were made by Grado, but nice to see them going speakers soon.

He clarified that that was a joke

I may look at the MS1000, since I think I'll need to step it up price-wise to get what I'm looking for in speakers.

Well I have the Energy CB-20s stacked on top of my Klipsch RB-61s right now, so if you are still looking and have any questions now would be the time. :P

The CB-20s definitely have an impressive soundstage as others have said about them. They are a lot less aggressive than the Klipsch though. Sweet sound that seems to surround you rather than pull you into it. They really do need a sub to shine though, but low-end aside they are a real steal for the money imo.

Those are good speakers, but they don't really sound like grados imho - almost the opposite, in fact, with a very flat midrange and overall freq. response. Maybe something like PSBs would be closer - I've only heard B25s but they reminded me a little bit of grados. Completely different midrange from the Energies.
