I am still bringing the 990/250 so I would be interested in hearing a recable job on these. I just picked them up and the jury is still out on whether I'm keeping them or not, but so far it looks like I am.

I heard both for a bit at CanJam LA. They're both very good and tho' sense memory is a slippery phantom [so I won't discuss my brief/rushed/time-distant impressions], I think it comes down to a matter of personal taste. The digital and part digital volume controls are very refined and smooth on both. Pico Slim's -- may I call it Analog/Digital -- control feels super smooth and ever so fine with a longish thin "knob" ... posh all 'round. Shadow has a little rocker control and also has superbly refined control and well matched L/R level thruout. It felt a bit awkward at first, and then it hit me that I'd prefer it, with all the in-pocket carry I do, when trying to fiddle with a tiny rotary knob is just a bitch ... and the finger-tip-touch rocker control is just what I've craved! I personally like the dynamic sound of the Shadow (which of course is why the Portaphile drives me), but the Pico Slim is a worthy high-end contestant. Kudos to Justin and Ray. I do need to get a more serious listen to them after the cursory intro I had to both (and Shadow was a proto).
What was I saying? Buy for now. [sic] ~(;-))
