I really like this combination, but think it might be better with a newer Portaphile. In case you're curious, I don't care much for ANY long-life portable amp, and the one inside the HiFiMan is no exception. But this combination is snappy!

And... Who removed the porta-bomber rig from my sig?
If my venerable-'ole-yet-newer-than-yours V2^2 maxxed is upgraded enuf fer ye (doubt there's a more current version since I just had a broken wire fixed & Cesar didn't mention an upgrade) ... I guess I might manage a train ride up to them thar parts ... considerin' I flew 2400+ miles for 1-2 stealth hrs at LA CanJam (youuuu know...). If Ray's new Shadow materializes there I'd love to hear a production version (LUVd the prototype w/my ES2s!!! ... more than Mustang...) ... will also enjoy slobbering (emotionally only) over new Senn8's and whatever gory-good-gear makes it there thru the cold November rain (play yer own Elvis track here). I'll wear my "Maui" cap to scare the chill (hopefully noone else) outa the room.

[BTW - just tried to access Portaphile site and it's not found ... hope it's a brief glitch!?]

Yup! That's the one. I was on the site the other day looking around and was surprised that it's still the same Portaphile. Least it seems that way.

Count the RSA Shadow in. I am also in touch with Todd at TTVJ about loaning me the new TTVJ Portable for the meet. If someone can con Justin in to sending a Pico Slim along, we might just have ourselves a three way showdown.

kb1gra, if you are still bringing you 990/250's, I have a pair that I recabled that you might like to hear. My predator has returned home so you can add that to any portable comparisons.

Now I really need to make sure my jeep is fixed. I guess I should put out the feelers again to see if anyone is coming down from upstate NY and would be willing to give a total stranger a ride?

Nice! The more the merrier. I'm looking for something to pair up with my HiFiMan.

I do not know Justin personally but I sent him a message informing him of the meet. If anyone is close to him, you might want to follow up with a phone call or email message. If he wants to send gear I will take responsibility for it and he can send it to me and I will make sure it gets back to him safely.

I would really like to hear a pico slim. I'll happily sell my Shadow if the slim has everything it's reported to have. I'm sure there are a lot of head-fiers who would be interested in the three way shootout between these as well.

I am still bringing the 990/250 so I would be interested in hearing a recable job on these. I just picked them up and the jury is still out on whether I'm keeping them or not, but so far it looks like I am.

I would be much nicer if Justin himself made it.

I heard both for a bit at CanJam LA. They're both very good and tho' sense memory is a slippery phantom [so I won't discuss my brief/rushed/time-distant impressions], I think it comes down to a matter of personal taste. The digital and part digital volume controls are very refined and smooth on both. Pico Slim's -- may I call it Analog/Digital -- control feels super smooth and ever so fine with a longish thin "knob" ... posh all 'round. Shadow has a little rocker control and also has superbly refined control and well matched L/R level thruout. It felt a bit awkward at first, and then it hit me that I'd prefer it, with all the in-pocket carry I do, when trying to fiddle with a tiny rotary knob is just a bitch ... and the finger-tip-touch rocker control is just what I've craved! I personally like the dynamic sound of the Shadow (which of course is why the Portaphile drives me), but the Pico Slim is a worthy high-end contestant. Kudos to Justin and Ray. I do need to get a more serious listen to them after the cursory intro I had to both (and Shadow was a proto).

What was I saying? Buy for now. [sic] ~(;-))

Well of course I'd love to meet Justin, I just recalled hearing someone say he couldn't make it but they were going to request gear.

It looks like I'll be buying the Shadow mostly because I really like that little volume rocker, but I'm interested in hearing the TTVJ and getting some opinions from others...word on the street it's a portable that can really drive the big boys.
