A few questions about the Clip+

Thinking about getting a Clip+. I don't really need it, but I've got a few questions. How does the sound quality compare to the iPod Photo and 120GB Zune? If it's better, does it sound warmer, cleaner, etc.? Is the MicroSD card/slot protected in any way? If it gets bumped the wrong way, will it shoot out? To put music on it, can I just drag and drop with Windows Explorer? Does Best Buy or any other big chain have the 8GB Clip+ yet? Does gapless playback actually work with FLAC (can it play Dark Side of the Moon with no gaps)?

On a related note, how does the Fuze stack up to it (mainly SQ-wise).

Thanks for reading. Sorry if any of these questions have been answered before.

uSD slots aren't exactly catapults.

I can't conceive of an accidental event that would cause a card to spontaneously eject.

The card has to be pushed in further than just flush with the case, so, sure, if something the size of a dime were to hit it squarely and push it in a few mm, it might come out.

Has this actually been a problem with any device ever?

Have both the Clip+ and the Fuze, and to me, they sound pretty much alike. However, I use the Fuze for Flac files only (8GB onboard and an 8GB card). I use the Clip for 192-320k WMA and MP3 files (8GB onboard and 16GB card).

Compared to the Zune80, the Clip+ is fine. I get good SQ from all three of those DAPs. Nothing to complain about. I primarily use UM3X phones, however, which are $379 retail. Also use Klipsch S4, which are really nice too with those players.

No gapless on the Clip+ I don't think.

And no, the cards will not pop out. Yes, drag and drop works fine.

I agree, I have both clip+ and Fuze, the SQ on both sound pretty much the same.

It was a pretty big problem when I had an HTC Dash. The (micro SD) card slot was covered up (under the battery cover), but if you hit it the wrong way, it would shoot out.

Thanks for the info. That's pretty much everything I needed to know. I'll probably end up getting a Clip+ for a backup player or something like that. Sounds like a pretty good 4GB player for $50.

Great little DAP. I had the 8GB and sold it, but the Clip+ is a major improvement re storage.

The Clip+ does have gapless playback.

Thanks for that. I wasn't aware.

Update. Listening to Holly Cole CD, It Happened One Night, which is a live performance, and sure enough, it's gapless. I ripped it to flac and MP3 320k (the former for my Fuze, the latter for my Clip+) and nice, it moves from one track to the next. Now, I get gapless. I am mostly a mix listener, so it was never a big issue.

Sweet. Any non-internet 8GB Clip+ sightings yet?

Not on my end. I live in North Texas, and have only seen the 4GB (red and blue) in one Best Buy, the one where I got mine. Happy hunting!

It won't be long remember they were just official released last week and actually just yesterday they started selling all colours and size at every Best Buy location here in Col. Ohio, so give it a couple of days and all Best Buys will have stocked up..

Gapless worked for me on the Abbey Road medley (FLAC, remastered version). Haven't tried it with Dark Side of the Moon yet.

I don't know why but it does sound better than the Clip, but I haven't done any A/B comparisons.

I didn't need it but glad I bought it.

In the "old" sansa clip. They used a newer version of the AMS chip (AS3531 I believe) in the clipv2 compared to clipv1.
So I wouldn't be surprised if the AMS chip in clip+ is another new version of the AMS chip. In some reviews it has been mentioned that the new clip+ sound a bit warmer than clipv1 or v2. I haven't heard it yet, so I can't confirm this but will probably get one within the next couple of weeeks.

Thanks again for all the input, guys. I've got some more money, and I'm thinking about putting together an ultraportable mid-fi rig with the Clip+ (4 or 8 GB Clip+, eventual Micro SD card, possible Fiio E5, ~$30 IEMs, and OGG). Seems like I really can't go wrong with the Clip+ with gapless playback that actually works (thanks for the info RASeymour), great SQ, and good price. Now I've got a few more questions:

How bad is hiss with ~$30 IEMs like the CX300's? (Is it as bad as the Zune 120?)
Would a Fiio E5 help the SQ much with ~$30 IEMs? (keep in mind, mid-fi intentions with this proposed beater rig)
How good is the Clip+'s volume control? (How often do you get stuck with a level that's too loud or too soft with no in between?)

EDIT: Probably going with Koss KSC75's for this rig instead of cheap IEMs. Might as well make this a bang for buck rig. I would use my UHP336's, but they're too bulky and they don't like to stay in when my ears get sweaty.

The gradations on the sound volume are just fine, enough levels to find the right volume for any music.

I use it with the FiiO5 but I doubt you would need to. I do it because of the wind.

I haven't noticed any great hiss with the Yuins but haven't tried with any IEMs.
