So wait with the zune hd can you get direct line out using the dock...i was under the impression that you couldn't do this with the older models and assumed you couldn't do it with the new one either??

The radio options on my Zune HD have FM region settings for North America, Europe, and Japan.

You can get digital line out over toslink from the new generation dock and HD.

With some modding you can get analog line out from the earlier docks (and the new one).

I looked and couldn't find any good directions online, but I know it's possible because I've done it.

The only issue w/the LOD on a Zune is it needs a power supply. If there's a nice workaround to allow it to be connected to an amp without an external power supply, please let me know. Otherwise, you'll be connecting an amp to the HP out. As good as it may sound, I want a TRUE line out - can you blame me????

I don't believe it does need a power supply, it just needs to authenticate with the chip in zune accessories that turns on all the data lines. A couple of accessories do not have any kind of alternate power source (v1 FM transmitter, wired remote), so they must be drawing power from the device. I have a friend that has a v1 FM transmitter with a DIY line out, that doesn't require any power source (other than the zune.) The wired remote also uses the line out (obviously due to its operation).

You probably talking about headphone out via Zune connector. It's actually not true line out as output level depends on volume and matching level of HP jack.
Zune docks aren't offering true line out, they just providing amplified HP output. I guess that vired remote and FM transmitter using exactly same path. If output level depends on Zune volume control then it's not true line out.

The headphone output is pretty good on the zunes so would a true LOD even be needed?

From what I've seen, the interface looks really slick. How's the OLED screen outdoors? Also, how does the 720p video playback look?

Viewing OLED outside is a non issue for me, I don't see how it's worse than the LCD on my A828
