I was wondering if lossless audio would be worth it in my situation. Most of my songs now are 256kbps AAC or 256kbps MP3 and I was wondering if I should consider ripping my songs in Apple Lossless or FLAC. What do you think?

IMO if lossless is available, use it. I have so little equipment it is sad, and I take what I can get in lossless

Only way to know if it's worth it is to try it. Rip an album you already have in 256kbps in apple lossless and see if you can hear a difference

For portable use, as of now, I can't justify lossless. In 2-3 years, it will be the only way to go. However if you have only 150 albums you want to carry around, a 64 GB player would do the trick with lossless. As of now there is only the 3G touch and the upcoming SONY players have that. This latter might not support lossless (only the Japanese version ATRAC, but you could buy that too if you know japanese... I am almost sure it has an English interface though)

Yeah, I think you would benefit from doing so.
At least rip and encode one or two of your favorite albums to a lossless codec/format and give them a try, comparing against your current AAC/MP3 files.

I go by the policy that from now on, I will rip lossless or 320kbps mp3, I don't see the point of going back and reripping because that would take forever!
But as mentioned earlier, try a lossless rip and see if you can hear the difference to the 256kbps rip. I guess it could also depend on the type of music ... for example, all my classical is lossless because I can hear a difference there, but I also listen to a lot of chinese pop, and I feel like the mastering quality is not very good anyway (not to mention who knows if I actually have a legit copy CD lol!).

Depends
Only after upgrading to my current DM was I able to distinguish between lossy and lossless. But I am procrastinating from re-ripping by using the equaliser on my stereo amp
Next upgrade will ruin it for me though
