Does anyone recoginize the Denon 5900/5910ci as a hi end source? - Page 2

My understanding is the 3910 has the exact same analog section as the 2900. The only real change was in the video, and denon switched from the custom for them DAC to the off the shelf dac chip that was almost identical.

I'm still amazed how much better HDCD sounds on the 5900 then the 2930ci.. I was beginning to think that HDCD was marketing BS.. Not any more..

I was even looking at the ES777 instead of the 5910, which I could get at the same price 800.. Would the 60lb ES777 be a better deal.. My main goal is CD/SACD. I already have a BR player.. Thanks again.. You make a lot of sense in this area.. Skylab too.. Even Seen a REGA Saturn that looked spiffy for under 400..
When you refer to "ES777", is that the Sony SCD-777ES? Between my modified Sony SCD-777ES and Exemplar 5910, it's redbook to Exemplar and SACD to Sony. Also, the 5910 seem to excel at playing DVD-A than the SACD though. For stock unit, I would likely pick the 5910 for its universal playback package and its newer DAC. The stock 777ES is great in SACD playback but can sound a bit slow and dark in redbook performance.

Yes Purk. I meant stock. Much easier to gauge for me.. It sounds like the 5910 is the one to get, since my SACD library is very small.. Just need to find the 700-800 for it.. Thanks again.. Plus, the 5910 can also be modded like your exemplar.. But will probably be ecstatic with the 5910 stock sound.

Given that you already loving the sound of the stock 5900, the 5910 is a logical upgrade IMO. The SCD-777ES is a player to behold if you have a lot of SACD. Be sure to check out DVD-A titles once you get the 5910. Parts also likely will be availble for many more years for the Denon 5910.

My player gets distorted with HDCD now. Does the 5900 have a different laser for CD/SACD/DVDA/HDCD? Or is this a thing of worse things to come. Do you think a good cleaning would work? It must be dusty after 7 yrs and 800 hrs of usage. Or is it a laser problem? would that require sodering? and do they still make lazers for the 5900? Buying vintage flagship is so hit or miss. Great price, but if something happens, sool.

Hmmmmm...in many heard of owning my 5900, I have never had that problem. Doesn't sound good.

true. But doable. Only have 2 HDCD. Still troublesome. Maybe I'll just mod it and have the modder fix the problem... Or just get the 3930/5910.
