LOL, since when did AMG become "reputable journalists"? No seriously, it's hard to argue that Tool is a metal band, they're more accurately a prog rock band with heavy metal influences. And even if Tool is a metal band there's no way Maynard James Keenan can be considered to be better than "good". If Tool can be considered a metal band then Porcupine Tree has to be considered a metal band too, Steve Wilson is a class above Keenan.

This list isn't that bad. If you take out Dane and Barlow, put in Halford and Khan, then argubly replace Kürsch and London with the likes of Tobias Sammet and Dickinson and you got a very accurate list of the contenders for best clean metal vocalists ever.

It's more of a matter of perspective. Back in the early 90s Tool was heavy metal, since the "nu metal" moniker wasn't around yet and no progressive rock sounded like Opiate-era material.

Likewise with Led Zeppelin, they were considered metal decades ago because the field was still in its infancy. Later in the 80s, the influence of the blues became less pronounced and the field gravitated towards morbidity as one of the defining factors of the genre. So yes, they were called "heavy metal" and yes, by today's standards they wouldn't be. If you're talking about the quality of vocalists, I think it's been lacking in death metal and of the choices I was familiar with in the poll, no one really stood out.

You think Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford are better clean singers than Rowan London? I cannot agree with that at all. Dickinson and Halford are great singers, but when it comes to shear talent, they are not even close. Rowan is a classically trained opera singer with fantastic range, the others... not so much.

Classically trained opera singer with fantastic range.... why the heck would that matter for a metal singer? London's clean vocals are like Akerfeldt's, they have a very specific and specialized role and for London his vocals work in tandem with the female vocals. For that reason I am not sure if it's fair to compare his vocals with the more general purpose and versatile vocals of Halford.

And anyway London is like Labrie at times, his high notes can be really painful to listen to.

You are only referring to his work on the two Requiem albums. There are no female vocals on Sombre Romatic and Elegant... and Dying; all vocals are done by him. If you have not heard either album, you are not doing him justice. If you view his vocal abilities as a sum of all the albums, he easily eclipses both Dickinson and Halford. And to compare Åkerfeldt's clean vocals to London's is silly. I love Mikael's clean voice, but it is nothing compared to London's.

Oh please! To compare James Labrie to Rowan London is silly. Labrie cuts corners all over the place live, while London sings faithfully to the studio album.
