There is a damned annoying peak in the midrange, which causes singers to step forward from the rest of the band, and yell directly into your ear. I can very much understand why people dislike this! Heck, I love EVERYTHING about the HD800 except this. It is fast, has excellent bass and treble extension, and its soundstage aint too shabby.

The DT48 is a flat headphone, and vocals sound good on them. The HD800 is far from it
I haven't heard that peak, either. Vocals are a very strong suit to the HD-800 in my opinion.

Has anyone else noticed that criticism of the HD-800 always takes on a personal aspect?

Here, you tell us that the only reason someone could like the HD-800 is because of personal bias. Not that tastes or ear structure differ among individuals, but that we're so personally invested in the headphones that we're either deceived or lying.

That's bunk.

I've owned and listened to most of the full-sized headphones out there. I purchased the HD-800 because I love the way it sounds.

I did not buy the HD-800 to validate something or other, I bought it because I wanted to listen to it. There's no agenda. Look at my sig - there are headphones from most manufacturers and I love them all. How is that possible if I am pushing a particular agenda?

Further, this gets back to that ridiculous argument that HD-800 owners only like them because of the cost. I guess that means that anything you pay for means a financial/emotional conflict resulting in an inaccurate opinion. I suppose you would have to receive the HD-800 as a gift to actually enjoy it, right? Because if you buy something you're too wrapped up in the price to be able to enjoy it.

I bought the HD-800 because I like it. Period. I've spent a lot more on other things that I don't feel as strongly about. If money was the cause of strong emotions, then how come rental unit that cost 100 times the price of a HD-800 doesn't get me all that excited?

Maybe it's just that you don't enjoy the HD-800. That's fine. There are a number of reasons for that and they don't make you a bad person, a hater, say there's something wrong with your hearing, etc. That's OK. But by the same token, you must accept that there are people who truly enjoy the HD-800. It doesn't have to do with justification, money spent or any of that stuff. We just love it.

You're the one that has to live with the purchase.

Also, remember that all headphones have coloration in their sound. No headphone or speaker in the world is neutral, and to get anywhere near neutral requires spending ridiculous sums of money, so what you should be concerned with is just finding a great sound... not trying to find the most accurate sound regardless of how enjoyable it is to you.
How can a headphone made strictly for ENT research, hearing test, accuracy for medical testing have colorization? The Beyer Data sheet for the DT48a clearly states no colorization.. Are the Beyer engineers lying? Misleading?

yes (technically everything is colored. never heard them though ive heard their bass isn't accurate and doesn't translate well. don't know a single engineer who ever used them. do know tons who love them HD600s including Mr. Bob Katz. As long as the headphones are somewhat flat in response (some are) and detailed (which most are) they are decent for mixing (graphs don't tell the whole picture).

bottom line is that headphones need to be learned to get to know their sound sig and how music translates thru them. i think the most important thing is that they are comfortable on your head and that you like the way they sound (SERIOUSLY!) who cares how flat anything is if you don't like the way it sounds. all good studio monitors and treated rooms still are musical and need to be. i also think that there wouldn't be a person on this entire web-site who given the choice wouldn't take a nice set of HD800s over anything that Beyer makes if not only to sell them and simply buy more Beyers!!!!!
