For backpacking or any travel, stay away from heads with handles and knobs that stick way out. I have an old Bogen ball head that looks a lot like the Manfrotto 488RC0 you posted before. I like the head but it's not great for travel for 2 reasons. The quick release lever sticks our and loves to jab things and it's a big hunk of metal that weighs a ton. It definitely weighs too much for backpacking. It is 20 years old so I assume the newer models are lighter. The quick release lever is not great though.
