Audio noob asking about cables

So I just recently got a pa2v2 amp and grado sr60's. Now I have heard about cables improving quality but I don't understand how that works. I currently am using a really long skinny cable that is going from my amp to my Zune 80. Now I've seen some people that have much thicker/shorter cables for this, why is that? Does this help quality?

I wouldn't worry about it much unless you have a few thousand dollars worth of audio gear. The only significant difference I've heard was from a single cheap and nasty headphone adaptor that cause the sound to become harsh. I have an old mic cable from an old Apple computer, which is insanely skinny and an Audioquest Mini something and there's no appreciable difference between either plugged between my computer an a portable amp.
