They say that HD800 KEEPS UP WELL v.s. HE90
But basically its just NOTHING SPECIAL. Only thing they said is like HE90 were made 300 only at the price of DEM 30.000= EUR 15.000 and nobody have done it up to date something like it, but HD800 does keep his place and earning the reference class name by itself at the price of EUR 999 only. The biggest effort of HD800 is that you can use it from iPod, Notebook or else, while HE90 with special amp only. Yeah, right, iPod generation...
We had probezuhören at the High End 2009 in Munich the opportunity to Sennheiser's new HD800 Reference headphones. As a comparison, is the legendary Orpheus, one of the best, if not THE best headphones ever. Although the HD800 will cost only about one fifteenth, he beats up well in direct comparison nevertheless.

They handled the Orpheus pretty rough.
I cringed a little bit.

Well, I just did so at the Stockholm meeting this weekend.
..and must say it sounded quite nice. Not quite on par compared to proper desktop amplification, but listenable indeed.

Since when did Apple adopt a 1/4" plug? And I didn't watch the video but something tells me the guy didn't try a pair of balanced HD800.
