This is the set.

Wow... thats the most bizarre thing I have seen from an RS1.

Are all the new 'i' models this way or is this the first we have seen?  I have an SR60i incoming... LOL my 3rd time owning this headphone.

Very bizarre. Mine are flush, black goop on drivers. Mine are RS1i, about 7 months old.

Just checked mine and they are flush to the wood. I would consider this part of the Grado "character" and "charm". ;)

Curious to know if it's just the way they made them. The black plastic is raised up from another piece of plastic that is flush with the cup.

Hmm, very strange, unless its the photos, but the wood looks very light compared to mine, and the (L) cushion from what I can see even looks like it has an extra rim on the inside of the outer part ok the cushion, and the driver is raised quite a bit.

You bought these from Amazon?

How do they sound?

Bought Direct from grado. They sound good to me. I've had the ps500s for a few years now so I have to get used to them again.

I can't imagine that's how it intended to be ... all the wood Grados I've owned were flush as well.

I'd expect it to negatively affect the soundstage ...

Yep... x2 on that.  Bringing the drivers closer in towards the ear almost always reduces the soundstage depth.  its partially why new pads sound more "airy" than old soggy, used-up flattened pads.  I'm really curious to hear what Grados response to this is.

I use SR60 pads on my RS1, but I add sheets of foam to help space out the drivers from the ear.  its less closed-in sounding than without.  it also alleviates pressure from the center "pointy" cartilage thing that sticks out from my ear.

I don't think I have ever posted this on HF... so here goes:

Very, very nice, kramer.

kramer, i like that idea. I use the smaller pads that you would find on the igrados. I stretch them over the cups then slip some bowls on over them. the part of the ear you mentioned also is a problem for me.
