Vinyl through cans...OH YEAH! - Page 2

for moving coil I really like the dynavector 20x series, I have and love the dyan 17d3 and the shelter 501 is a good choice if you like smoother response.

I have no idea how good the phono pre you are using is and it may be a good idea to step that up in the future. Decent phono pre amps can run a grand plus though.

But its the Denon 103R, the 103 without the R is ok, but then the shelter 201 is better.
In an mid-up range the Shelter 501 and Lyra Dorian are superb carts

oh.. my favourite MC cart: Denon 103r...!
matches well with my Gyro SE and Jolida JD-9A phonostage
very musical cart!

i also have the Zyx Bloom Low MC cart....but i prefer the denon 103 and denon 103R.

forgot to mention the zyx bloom great cart if you can still get one from sorasound for $450 do not pay the new retail of $1000. At 450 it is a good deal at $1000 it's overpriced and I would go dynavector 71d3

how about those clearaudio products?

Indeed!
Vinyl, tube amplifier and headphone = bliss.

I was shopping only a coupleof days ago for a turntable to use for headphone listenting. I went and auditioned two turntables..an Empire 498 and a Thorens TD125 (with Jelco SA-250 ) arm on it.

I heard them through speakers with a hagerman Cornet phono. The EMpire was alright but the Thorens just sounded amazing (the guy was using some super rare Ruby spruce or something cartridge).

Now, the main conern is the clicks and pops, the humm/hiss in the records..wouldn't that stand out when you listen to records through headphones? I decided to not pick up a TT because of this one reason.

If you are entering analogue you need the whole system, and a good vacuum record cleaning machine is fundamental! I use a clearaudio matrix with L'art d'son cleaning solution, I wouldnt let my cartridge touch any record that hasnt been cleaned with it. Then you will realize how velvet black can vinyl get. A cleaning machine is as important as any other part of the analogue system, actually I see it as the first in the chain!

ANALOGUE IS A RITUAL, DIGITAL IS A CONVENIENCE

If your vinyl is dirty and trashed, it will be an issue. If it is clean and well cared for, it is not an issue at all.

Also, the ticks and pops are not anymore pronounced on headphones than on speakers.

You know you want to do it!!!!!!!!!!!

For what it's worth, I think vinyl and headphones are a good fit because the channel separation specs on vinyl frankly suck. I believe this acts as a natural crossfeed of sorts.

Doing it now. First time since upgrading the cables to the Signets. Sounds amazing.

Black Sabbath on vinyl.

Yummmm...

depends on the rig I have some needledrops that are pretty dang quiet in one channel when there is nothing going on with music in the other.

If you look at the specs at the cartridges, you'll see crosstalk is several orders of magnitude higher than the worst digital systems. I'm now playing around with the higher end Ortofon cartridges, both stereo and mono, and can speak to these measurements being "worse" than the line contact stylus in my Zyx. However, in some senses the imaging and soundstage is considerably better, especially with headphones. If you think about it, the problem should be exaggerated when there is a signal in both channels, but it's harder for our brain to perceive it as such.

Put Roger Waters' Amused to Death on a good analog rig and you might rethink your channel separation comment.
