Which of these Headphones is closest to Grado sound ?

I like the sound of my SR-125's but the around-the-ear fit of my HD-600's.
to get that fit in the Grado line requires $$$$ (GS-1000 ? )

SO, from reading many threads, I'll have to just jump and get one of these since I have nowhere to go to hear them.

which is closest to Grado sound ?

DT-880 250 Ohm
DT-880 600 Ohm (how much difference between the DT-880 model's sound ? )
Sony SA-5000 (although I'm not a fan of leather ear pads, I may do it if they sound like Grados )
Audio Tech ATH-AD2000 (I think that is the open-back model)

Thanks in advance for your views.

Cheers,
Jeff

Honestly, none. Grado has a signature of it's own, just like Ultrasone.

Uh Oh - this is the answer I feared most, and its the first one up...

Thanks, because if that is the case, I need to hear it.

If you want the jumbo pads but with a less expensive model, check the ms1000 thread. They use alessandro headphones, put a distancer and jumbo pads on them.

The DT880 250 ohm sounds absolutely nothing like a Grado. Of the headphone's I've personally heard the AD2000 comes closest to the sound of an RS-1. Less treble energy so not as up front as the Grados. Soundstage is both wider and deeper. Bass is fuller and deeper. It is not the same but if you like Grados you will probably like the AD2000. Extremely comfortable!

Changing pads on a Grado changes the sound. You may like comfies, flats or the bagel pads, but each will cause a Grado sound different. You may or may not like the change.

True. However, you can find other headphones with a forward sound signature. The DT880 and MDR-SA5000 do, and you might enjoy that. But you won't get the same coloration you find in the regular Grado lineup.

The good news is that you can get used to the sound of another headphone. I change up between several pairs that sound very different from each other. I love all of them, and I'm sure you can appreciate headphones that don't have the Grado sound, too.

I'd recommend the d2000s. They're the most "open" closed cans I've heard so far.

AD2000 sound kinda like Grados, very engaging but its more in the vocal area. Vocal sounds really sweet with them.

If you have heard the 600 Ohm version, does it sound significantly different that the 250 ??

I've seen numerous references on various forums that imply the 600 Ohm version of the DT-880 sounds best. Anyone know in what way ? Is there a down side other that they would be harder to drive ?

Overall, I'm afraid Uncle Erik could be right. I'll just have to get used to different phones.

DT880s(both versions) sound NOTHING like Grado's. If you like Grado style why not stick with it? or try an HD600?

I have not heard the 600 ohm version of the DT880.

Thanks to all for the input.
It seems like for now I will put this in the category with things like cleaning the garage. That is "continue evaluating the situation before taking action"
The wife says I'm good at putting things in that category, so maybe a solution will emerge......?

Cheers,
Jeff
