[BIG STAR] The Other Box Set in Sept... - Page 3

Some nice live tracks from 1973 on disc4. Here's what Jody Stephens said about those performances:

"Not exactly our crowd," Stephens says. "After our performances you can hear one person clap. Not a lot of energy coming back from the audience. The good thing about that particular recording is that there were mics set up in the room. It wasn't a board feed, where those can be kind of dry."

I have a few sub par Big Star collections: (Thank You Friends: Ardent Story, Nobody Can Dance, Big Star Story)... any idea how much of this set it truly unreleased.

There is an interview out there that was done as part of a "history of the memphis sound" or something like that with Alex Chilton several years back that said that pretty much everything that the original big star had recorded in the studio had been released in one form or another, but that was a ton of live bootlegs some of decent quality, that had never been officially released.

I'm trying to see if I can locate it. I do know it played on Memphis radio stations during the annual Memphis in May musicfest

Well I can say without hesitation the box is an improvement over the relatively recent repackages of #1record/radio city.

The tracks sound more open and cleaner on both phones and through my home system. The box is extremely well done and the book and the live cd#4 make it well worth it IMHO

There are lots of unreleased demos, alternate versions and unused mixes in the box set. For a start I never knew about the live performances I mentioned before from 1973- different from Big Star Live from 1974. The set added nicely to my collections.

That's an amazing song. pretty great album too...its around on a good sounding vinyl pressing I picked up a couple years ago. It seems to strike closer to the feel of Sister Lovers (late night, emotionally crushing, sparse, and beautiful) than the Big Star stuff Bell was actually involved with.
I only have 3rd/S. L. on cassette tape so maybe I'll have to bite the bullet on this set.

Just ordered the box set. Held out as long as I could but the reviews did not help.

Well, I'll tell y'all what: My first impression of this set is that Rhino did a bang-up job. I'm drawn in by the sound of the thing right off, but what really impresses me is how beautifully the alternate takes and unused mixes are programmed with the masters. Album purist that I am, that kind of thing usually bugs me, but not here—at least not on the first two discs. So far, so good…

I agree, I have had my set for a couple days and really wanted to digest it. I can honestly say that even though I had close to everything they had put out up until now, this set is FULL of revelations. I feel like I am discovering the band new again. Sound quality blows away the old recordings. Even the demos sound like Bell and Chilton are playing acoustic in my bedroom. And the music flows very nicely, and not academic like many compilation sets.

Very happy with this. This and my other terrific discovery this week, Rain Machine, are keeping me tethered to my headphones.

OK, so I finally got around to pulling my Big Star LPs (#1 Record and Radio City) out of storage for a comparison. Keep An Eye On The Sky sounds great overall (100 times better than the Beatles box, DMahler), but I dunno…maybe it's just that I'm an unreconstructed geezer, but I think the original LPs sound a bit more dynamic. Andy Hummel's bass seems so much more present in the mix. I usually keep my receiver's tone controls turned off, but with the box I found myself adding/adjusting the bass. I have the UK two-fer pressing with the gatefold cover; I'd forgotten that it was a reissue by the Memphis soul label Stax, not Ardent. It made me think about this passage in the box set's booklet:

"That city. Memphis, 1972. Music was made of lightning. It could strike and burn, smelling of gunpowder. A limousine in Memphis traffic meant the presence of Elvis or Isaac Hayes. The Rolls Royces belonged to Al Green and Willie Mitchell. Memphis bore the strength and rejuvenation of adolescence, shooting stars like Roman candle fireballs: B.B. King, Rufus Thomas, Jerry Lee Lewis, Otis Redding, Johnny Cash, Hayes, The Box Tops, Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs, Green. Walk the streets here, get rocketed beyond. Every big star a teenager, every teenager a big star."
