UK Meet (UPDATED!) - Saturday November 7th 2009 - Page 10

Hi guys. I've been in touch with the conference room coordinator this morning & have provisionally booked an additional room (Conference Room 1) for the day. Now we need to decide whether we want/need it. Personally, I think it would be sad to have to limit numbers, though admittedly the interest this has generated certainly surpasses what previous UK meet threads have suggested (which is great!). Conference Room 1 is fairly sizeable as well, and is the only one available, so I suspect it could certainly allow us to go as far as we want with this meet. Obviously, there's a cost implication, an extra £180. I'll discuss with our sponsor first, but as this almost doubles the initial figure, it would be entirely reasonable if us attendees were required to stump up for the extra room. I'll update you on that soon.

I'm planning on visiting the hotel next Monday (28th Sep). I may or may not get a chance to see both rooms (as at least one of them is in use that day), but I'll be meeting with the technical chap at the hotel to sort out power issues. Having not seen the hotel or the rooms yet, it's hard for me to visualise how tight we are going to be on space in the one room, though from Doug's comments I suspect we are looking at a cap on attendees from now if we don't take on the extra room.

Raffle-wise, great idea. Throw some more thoughts out there & I'm sure we can come up with something.

With regards to new Headfi members posting their intent to attend, in fairness that is what we've requested...that anyone wishing to attend must register here and post their intent. I do understand the concern though, and frankly I share it. I think it comes down to a simple decision...do we allow non current Head-Fi members to attend at all? As you'll have seen earlier in the thread, the meet has been advertised on a few other forums, so we were bound to see new people appear. If this is uncomfortable, I suggest those threads be updated to that effect. From my point of view, I think perhaps a few new members might be ok, but I'll start to worry if loads want to attend (remember, everyone has to be pre-registered on this thread). But, I understand that even one unknown might be too many for some, so please just let us know your thoughts guys. The most important thing here is that the established Headfi members, who are of course making the meet worth attending, feel comfortable & secure on the day.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this meet . Cheers. Mark.

Fantastic, congratulations! No need to wear a name tag on the day, you'll be the chap fast asleep on the floor of the conference room .

Sounds great, please count me in.

sounds good fun. I can possibly come and would be able to bring an Audio-gd Compass DAC/Amp and some AD700's.

But the problem is, I use my PS3 as a source for my Compass and I don't really like the idea of traveling all that way with a PS3 (for obvious reasons).

For those wondering, my main reasons for going would be to try out headphones as I would like to upgrade from my AD700s.

I'm happy to bring along a Pioneer DV515 for you to use as a transport if that would help. I think I'll leave my PS3 at home too .

That would be very kind of you

And if there are any headfiers in the Peterborough region, I could maybe give you a lift.

If I am able to attend (either through work commitments and/or being welcomed to attend) I would have no problems with contruibuting towards room hire.

So how do we potentially 'unknowns' get to be known? I've been a member for some time but don't get the chance to post as often as some through work commitments. I similarly don't get the chance to travel the distances I might like to to get to other events. This particular event is reasonably close for me and at a time when I could possibly make it.

So - am I to be barred from attending because I'm an unknown? In other words, is this to be a closed event and by invitation only or is it a genuinely open event where people like me with not much experience can come and learn and actually feel welcome?

Best Wishes
David

Hi David.

Please don't worry, you are most welcome to attend! We're only talking about people who register specifically to attend the meet...so those who register after this thread started. Even for those people, it's just an element of caution really. I'm sure there's a 99.9% chance they are perfectly genuine, but a concern was raised which I think should be discussed, as at the end of the day, the meet is nothing without a good selection of people & gear. Personally, I think one or two brand new members could be ok, though I think they could do themselves a favour and link to some feedback or involvement in other forums just to put people's minds at rest, which is something I've done a number of times when first joining other forums.

Cheers. Mark.

My other half needs the car on Saturdays, so i'm on the train from Hull - you can't beat the trans-pennine express. Unfortunately Hull is not a place peeps 'pass through' but you can always hitch a ride from the wagons off the 6am ferries!

I hate to look like a paranoid guy or to put off newbies, but there's a limit somewhere as far as these things go isn't there?
If it helps, I was intending to travel with a friend of mine apmusson who's a more established member. Been into cans for a very long, time kit includes HD600s, 650s, Lehmann BCL, Stello DA220 MkII. Only recently discovered head-fi and was intending to join anyway, but yes the meet was one of the reasons I joined right now.

I hadn't thought about it at the time, but understand the caution...
