Murmuring along with it, you mean?

That's where the album title supposedly came from, the early recording engineers saying that Stipe was mumbling/murmuring the lyrics too much.

Yeah and I'm old enough to remember when it was new and the "altered" state I was frequently in when listening to this album. Kind of made the discussion about "moral kiosk" seem more important at the time
