OK. Fine. Let's say I am asking for something totally inconsistent and something really hard to do. Why misquote until the very last second? Why not tell me beforehand. A simple, "YES! We can do that but it will be insanely expensive..." would be nice.

In my profession people always ask questions before sending me something. Perhaps they have found a rare 78 recording. They want it transferred, restored and remastered. However, the 78 is broken and they want it fixed. This is an unusual request. Because I know it's an unusual request, I'll quote them extra and tell them so right off the bat. If the price will be high, I let them know immediately so they can consider other options as well. Why waste their time (and mine) or lead them on?
Regardless, I might still use them for a remold.

The custom idea is out of the question for that price though.
