Hakko 936 Question

Thread Starter
I've decided to purchase this soldering iron, as the previous (inexpensive) irons I've had really sucked.

My question is that on ebay, they show some that says "936" and others that say "936-12". Is there any difference between the two?

Thanks.

Edit: Is the tip the unit ships with small enough for working on smaller resisters and things? Or do I have to also get a smaller tip? And, if so, what small tip would you recommend?

Thanks again.

936-11, ESD station, includes 900S (small) iron and iron holder
936-12, ESD station, includes 907 (medium-standard) iron and iron holder
936-13, ESD station, includes 908 (large) iron and iron holder
Simple as that!

Google is your friend...

The included tip is quite good for all around work. If you are going to do any fine pitch SMD, then you would probably want a smaller tip. I have a smal screwdriver tip (900M-T-0.8D IIRC) as well as a larger one than the stock (900M-T-2.4D or 900M-T-3.2D) for bigger stuff.

keep in mind that you can get knock off products for half as much

I second the .8mm tip for smd. I use a 1.6mm for everything else.

Order your tips directly from Hakko....they don't charge for shipping

I would use this for precision smd like the Gamma2:

I used the chisel tip .8 with a 45x scope and still couldn't avoid a few solder bridges on the fine pitch ic's.

The stock tip that comes with the 936 is the chisel tip 1.6.

I use the .8 chisel tip, and I wouldn't have it any smaller than it already is. Small tips have limited usefulness because it can't hold solder and it can't hold it's heat. I did the ICs on 4 bantam dacs and a y1 without a sweat.. you just need some flux, and something like this helps a lot too.

lol, you took the words right out of my fingers while I was typing... except I like the conical tip a little better then the chisel tip.

FWIW you can get tips on eBay a lot cheaper if you don't mind the wait.

*shrug* I've successfully built 2 full y1's, and a y1 USB-SPDIF with a 1.6mm chisel tip.

I have several different tips, but I find myself using the stock tip from the 936-12 98% of the time.

Sometimes controlling the quantity of solder on a very fine (<<1mm) can be more trouble than it's worth imo.
Something a little larger can be easier to work with, even for smd stuff.

The Hakko 936 is on sale for $60 at Fry's this week, if you can get to a store. It isn't on sale on their (useless) web site. I picked one up yesterday.
