recabled my dt880 pro:impressions

i thought it was ok to start a new thread for this.

i used mogami quad and a neutrik 1/4" jack. if anything it made the sound worse than the stock cable! the highs are a little shrill and the bass is not as tight.

was this to be expected? is there a better cable to use on these? or, is the stock cable the best there is?

the stock cable "appears" to be junk. it does sound good enough though. i wonder if i cannot make these headphones better than they already are which is great imo.

Interesting. People seem to be getting good results with Mogami wire. I too want(ed) to recable my pair of DT880s with Mogami and Neutrik but after reading this I think I'll live with the stock cable.

i have read here that cat5 is very good. i couldn't live with a cat5 cable though. it looks rotten and it is like $2 for 5'! cosmetics is somewhat important to me. i don't really want it in techflex because of the microphonics.

i actually thought the sound with the stock cable was a lot better than the mogami. maybe beyer actually researched what cable went on their headphones. hmm.

Interesting! I was just searching for recabling info on this headphone, not because I believe it necessarily makes any difference, but because the DT cable feels so sucky. After weeks it still won't straighten out. Good to know I can probably save some $ on that, at least.

I recabled my 880pro with mogami mini quad as well and don't think there was anything like this.
Getting rid of that coiled pita was worth it imo.

oh cr4p - just noticed pro version. :P I wonder if recabling the premium version would lead to the same kind of negative sound changes OP reports?

They are almost if not the same thing. Both semi open and 250ohm. I still dont see how changing a copper wire would much change on a speaker. The opp went from copper to copper, not unbalanced to balanced, nor copper to silver. I think you will be fine. Be honest, do you think 22guage is going to make your cans sound bad but 28gauge will make them sound good? Im not saying the 1300 post opp is wrong, maybe a bad solder joint somewhere? Or over heated the wire to a point it stiffened the speaker?

for the price, Mogami is a good solid choice - i've only used the wire as component ICs with cheap Neutrik phono jacks. it's a bit was a bit grainy sounding. i prefer my DIY solid silver, Cardas, and Supra ICs. a DIY Cardas HP cable would be my first choice to rewire my dt990s/600ohm. i've been thinking about it....
