Sennheiser mods - Page 6

I have the HD555 and the HD580. I performed the Sound stage mod, and a detachable 3.5 cable mod to the 555's along with painting them red. I painted the HD580 a dark metallic grey and sewed burgundy fabric over the headband padding and replaced the stock fabric between the ear pads and driver with the same burgundy fabric. I also did the apuresound mod to them. I've ordered the HD600 grills and the HD650 cable, but the grills are back ordered 4-5 weeks at the moment. Here are some pics :)

What is that silver ring thing you have in your hd580 earcup? O.o

I did the quarter mod, and put a washer around the hole just for looks, but after I did it it was reflected the sound back towards the driver, so I took it off. It looked cool though. Haha

Converted my HD580 grills to HD600-ish grills today :)

I'll be painting them black in a day or two.

Cool mod! Well how does it sound now?

It sounds a little bit more open. The bass is less harsh, and the mids are pushed back a little. I like my bass but I also like detail. Maybe someday i will attempt a semi-open HD580 grill and see what that sounds like. I know what the inside of DT880 cans look like, maybe I'll try a similar design. Here are some pics of the stuff behind the grills of my old DT880 (That I traded +cash for my HD580) :)

Probably been said, but on the 25s one can just leave out / pull out the foam between driver and cushions. Bit more direct and slightly more highs. Which the 25 needs if one is in the "no Eq" camp.

After paint! I think they turned out pretty nice.

I just cut the center out of my HD580 grills and sanded that rim down, then used some metal mesh from a small desk organizer think for the new grill and glued that in there. Then painted it black.

Here it is, the beginning of my Semi-closed HD580 testing. I'm basing the design off what Beyer did with the DT880 cans. Pic below.

Here is what I have so far.

I'm very surprised by the results I'm hearing right away. There is a TON more bass and mid bass now. It isn't overwhelming because the highs are now much closer than they were before. This basically just put everything a little closer to you. It still has just as much detail as it did before, and maybe even a little more detail in the mids area. I'm still listening for more changes, I've only listened to a few songs. This is pretty fun though! They sound a little more alive now.

But they're ugly ;P

If I decide I want to keep this sound, I'm going to get a piece of thermoforming plastic and mold a custom set of Semi-closed grills for these :D

It may be a little late, but:

AWESOME Grado-style mod! :gs1000smile:

How has the sound changed? Are there more highs now?

What pads are those?

Have you applied any damping?

Is the headband also DIY?
