I really love so many of his albums...his early Sun records are great, his later American series is great, and his live albums are, of course, amazing. My pick is gonna be pretty bizarre to most, but I *think* my favorite album of his is the "Cash/Dylan Sessions" bootleg. It's a recording of them singing/playing together in the studio when Dylan had his "Nashville Skyline" voice. They sing some of their own songs and some classics as well. Dylan sounds great and Johnny sounds unbelievable. When Dylan said that Cash had "a voice from the center of the Earth", that's exactly what Johnny sounds like on some of the tracks on this album. Just massive. They both play around a bit with melodies, and the ad-libbing is probably what I like most. Cash's "daughter of a pistol" line is one of the only times I've laughed listening to music. The first time I heard this album I wasn't floored by it, but the more I listened to it the more I got hooked. There are SO many little intricacies on this album that keep it fresh. Highly recommended.

The classic: "Live at Folsom." His early Sun Records stuff is the best, but I also love one of his last: American III: Solitary Man. Very heartfelt and moving and scary. I also love the pure hokeyness of "Live at Madison Sq. Garden."

To me, the Cash/Dylan sessions are, sorry Nr3dling, pure torture. I've never heard 2 talented people slaughter more songs in my life.

The three live prison concerts at San Quentin, Folsom and Österåker. Cash really sold the heart of these songs to the prisoners, jaded men who weren't supposed to care about other human beings. Great balance of swagger and earnestness.

I really like the American Recordings series, sans the posthumous releases. None of them really came together well though, each album had weak points in covers that Cash just wasn't meant to do. His cover of "Danny Boy" on American IV, for instance, sounded so strained and detached from the background organ.

Johnny Cash and his All-dysfunctional Family Band (Meth-riders in the Sky), with June Carter Off Her Lithium. Roseanne was out promoting a postmodern novel, but she phoned in a searing version of "Tennessee Crack-top Stash."

Actually, that was a live performance at La Ronde in Montreal in 1988, but I saw a reprise of it in Birmingham, Alabama in 1994 (June Carter'd passed on). I've just gotta say, Johnny was so consciously upfront about his own substance abuse that he always bravely and gamely made Carter Family tours part of the young'uns rehab.

Don't get me wrong--I love Johnny Cash and June Carter. But the humanity! Oh, the humanity!
