Small player with good sound quality? - Page 2

yeah, the ipod shuffle 1g is good along with sansa clip if you want small. i don't get how the amp3 can be recommended when someone is looking at small (shuffle size). the amp is small compared to a regular ipod, but not really that small.

it is much, much heavier than the shuffle.

The 3rd gen Shuffle sounds great, better than both the 1st and 2nd gen IMHO (I have them all), however Apple really screwed up putting the controls on the headphone; its really not user friendly (Apple take note!). But all is not lost as Scosche have a couple of options with the tapstick and tapline accessories:

ScoscheDirect> Main Section > ...for your iPod > iPod shuffle

The voice over and addition of playlists on the new Shuffle is absolutely superb and you'll be blown away by how small the unit really is. You'll be pleasantly surprised with the sound once you've got some decent IEM's.

However if you can't be bothered using a 3rd party accessories to control the new Shuffle (which is a total pain in the arse) then I'll champion getting a Sansa Clip, which really is a great player out of the box, just add a decent set of IEM's and your away.

Though Clip's slightly larger than the 2nd gen Shuffle as you'll see from the attached photo, it's still a small very fine device and well worth considering, the build quality is good for the money, maybe not a good as the Shuffle's if I'm being honest, but still well worth the money.

Wait 2 seconds and I'll be accused of being pedantic by mentioning that the Clip is larger than the 2nd gen Shuffle and huge compared to the 3rd gen Shuffle, plus build quality maybe not as good. The Clip has legendary status and a huge following here on Head-Fi - A reputation that's well deserved.

But I also believe that not enough people have listened to the 3rd gen Shuffle to make an informed opinion, if you can live with it's screwed up controls (i.e being on the headphone wire) then maybe it's worth a look - I suspect currently it's the smallest MP3 player on the market if size is important to you.

I had a 3rd gen shuffle, I traded it for a used clip. Funny thing is, I dislike the shuffle 3G so much I forgot I had 1.

I also reccomend the Sansa clip. I bought the 8Gb version for $50 at Walmart. Excellent SQ. Sounds great with Grado sr60 and also Senn MX400 earbuds (if you happen to have an old pair - I got mine free with an old iriver player when I bought it.)

Build quality is just fine, but I've heard that the clip may break off sometimes - mine hasn't so far.

The other reason I got the clip is that it works with Rhapsody. I already had a subscription for my Squeezebox and for $2 more per month I can add up to 3 portable players.

The clip on the Clip is pretty flimsy and I would not rely on it. Far better is the built-in clip on iPod Shuffles. Nothing wrong with having a detachable clip, but Sandisk made it a little too easily detachable

I see the new Archos Clipper has the right idea with a built-in clip

I have a 1st gen ipod shuffle, with a lot of use on it. Problem is that I don't know if it works correctly or not. If you are interested PM me and I will search for it. (don't remember its capacity)

the 3rd gen nano suffers what the 1st gen does not: narrow channel separation and bass roll off. the 2nd is the same. though the 3rd may have less hiss, it simply hasn't detail where it should have it... but no problem. for size, there isn't a better sounding device on the planet.

Well that is my curiosity piqued. I am going to try to source a 1st Gen Shuffle and compare to my other DAPs

I have a Clip and it has served me well. I would not get the Shuffle just for the fact it has no screen. I imagine it must be a real pain trying to find that song you want to listen to on the Shuffle. Also, I had no problems with the clip on my Clip. Used to attach it to my jeans and forget it was even there. For true portability with no compromise I strongly recommend the Clip.

I want a clip as part of my walk/work out rig, but can't understand why SanDisk gives flac support to fuse but not clip.

The clip does support flac, with the latest firmware.

i use the shuffle 1G with 512 MB - it is perfect for my uses. I never take it out to look at it as it is in my shirt pouch for riding. I would not use a screen if it had one and wouldn't feel safe either.

Clip with rockboxx will be mine someday to replace this ailing 4-year old machine, but it won't be useful as a replacement for my main DAP.
