Yes, there are. Even backing up your own purchased CD is questionable. I remember a joke a while back, when George W Bush mentioned that his iPod had Beatles tunes on it. Since Apple (the Beatles one) have yet to release digital versions of their tunes, it could be argued that our former President was breaking the law, if CD ripping is in fact illegal.

I am quite sure it will happen some day, and I am waiting for the day.
Not paying money for lossy encoded music, but the day iTunes Store take on ALAC I will give them a try. As long as the prices stay competitive of course...

And DRM free. And easily allow exporting from ALAC to a free open source lossless codec that can be used on other platforms.

and how much are they going to charge? lossy files are $0.99 - thats a little over the price of a CD (with artwork, jewel box etc etc, mind you)
Such is the sad state of the music industry today.

The very least they could do is offer the itunes exclusive albums in lossless.

That is exactly what I do. It works pretty well and you have a hard back-up in case your drive dies.
I don't buy from iTunes because I refuse to pay for compressed files.
