so you put the K701 on the same level as the cd3k?

I will try to have a listen at the dx1k this week-end, I wanna know whether the hype is true

to me the most important is soundstage, I make my own 5.1>binaural downmixes on the PC...and I want it wide-wide-wide, and I honestly wonder how it could get any wider than that

I'd also be curious to hear about the HD800/D7k from a cd3k fan(boy) POV

I think the K701 is more obviously flawed than the CD3K, but there are times when I get tremendous enjoyment out of them.

I would love to listen to a DX1K - maybe at RMAF I'll get a chance.

well, if everything goes well I will definitely listen to the dx1k at the end of the week..on a RSA Hornet

IceClass doesn't want to explain himself more than "I prefer the DX1K over the CD3K."..so I'll have to find out by myself.

BTW, I was comparing the leather DT770/600Ω(far more transparent trebles than the 250Ω) against the cd1k, the 770 gives much more harsh trebles and far more details in the trebles(rendering mp3 totally unbearable )...but the soundstage is AWOL and the bass is as boomy as can be, killing the PRAT altogether.

I guess it's a bad case of studio monitoring cans Vs euphonic audiophile gear.

I understand recabling the cd1k and modding the cups would improve its sound(as it's a baby-cd3k at this point), I'm working on it

and the day I'll get a holy cd3k, I'll keep it as a potential driver donor anyway

Well I have the modded one's on my head again, and the smile is from ear to ear.
The soundstage is larger and the mids highs are more forward, with a tighter bass than the stock.
Its a combination of the best of the CD3000/SA5000 with a bit of sweetness added.

For others with the cd range of phones I modify mine by attaching a strip of foam rubber to the top of the strap that fits on your head, the thickness is such that when on your head the top band rests on the foam.
This stops the phones moving around as it locks the 2 bands together,by altering the thickness of the foam you can change where they sit on your ears as well.
It makes a very comfortable phone even better.

It feels like a bit of a waste of time when you're comparing every can under the sun no matter what type let alone model.
Too many apples to oranges comparisons for me.

Just buy a CD3k and be done.

well, I've found a Chinese url, where some say that the bass is overwhelming and the trebles dark on the DX1k...but its soundstage would be far more natural(and narrower too) : http://translate.google.com/translat...3Doff%26sa%3DG

(you need to change the page number in the url, clicking on 2/3 does not work)

and the guy who used to have my cd1k has a dx1k now, because he looooves the bass on his RSA Hornet...but he said that the soundstage is nowhere near as wide.

but well, you don't wanna give us your impressions. fine

I don't think comparing DX1k <> CD3k is an apple/orange comparison...anyway, the PRAT is crazy on my cd1k, it makes me forget about all my troubles...it's just pure bliss, like an endless Kodak instant

@ford2: thank you sir! if it works out, I'll make it up to you

Don't want to spoil the fun guys, but for how much are they going these days, USD 500-600? Well, for that money I would try some other closed back, like W5000.
My biggest issue with CD3k was that they were artificial sounding with very odd feeling that the sound came from some kind of hole.

I bought them second hand in 1996, so I'd say they're quite durable

brand new:

^ Yup, I bought my first pair of CD1000's back in 1991. Had them until 2002 until I had accidentally drop them on the floor. The result from the drop was that the headband assembly and driver enclosure hangers broke apart. With the damage can in pieces and not knowing you could order replacement parts back then (wasn't a Head-Fi member back then), I threw them away in the trash. How stupid I was to throw away a perfectly working pair cans that only need some replacement parts. In 2004, I managed to get my hands on another pair of CD1000's that were in much better condition than the pair I originally had. This pair remains with me today and sees regular use among the rotation of my other cans.

The woody recabled CD3000's are on my head now, these will be going to the grave with me,sweet sweet music.
Just put the stock ones back in there case, looks like its going to be a long time before they see the light of day again, they can keep the SA5000's company because I can not see them getting much use either.

Congrats on getting a pair, they do sound sweet. What type of wood and cable did you get on yours?

feel like joining me on a cd1k-modding thread? Germania gave me many hints(mostly modding the cups inside)...she said that both her and several ppl at meetings said it'd sound as good(or better) than a stock cd3k.

she says I should also recable it, but all my attempts on the DT770/600Ω failed...and yes, I used litz-braided quad TWcu wire + furutech plug

she advised me some van damme microphone mini-cable. I still got a brand new furutech, some cardas solder....so I might fancy giving it a shot

atm, my cd1k is stock...except for the foam inside the cups, that's been replaced w/ a "bassier" kind.. it

and the most beat-up pads award goes to this guy :

needless to say he was rather pleased to buy brand new pads from me
post #44 of 385
looking at these cd1ks and cd3ks. You can definitely see the resemblance of the looks to the r10
post #45 of 385
I think I posted the service manuals on the first page?

anyway, they made the CD750/850/950/1k using the same black plastic enclosure. then they took the 1k drivers, added a better cable(plug too?)/gray "organic fiber composite" ear cups(to kill resonances?)/ a few rubber washers so none of the parts would touch or resonate and made the cd3k

the r10 uses the same enclosure as the cd3k, w/ wooden cups, genuine leather pads, dual ended cable and even better drivers..that's all, I think?

some ppl might prefer the dx1k and what not to the cd3k, but I think the r10 will remain on top of many people's lists for a looooooong time

this said, I'm getting a used CD750 to cannibalize the headband(which costs $100 + shipping on audiocubes )...Germania told me that a properly modded cd1k could sound just as good as a cd3k, and that italian guy who sells a used cd3k didn't like my offer

he's prolly expecting +500 EUR offers, hah...plus he doesn't have any feedback...I thought you needed +50 posts to sell stuff in here anyway
