I would hardly call a few seconds of sampling ripping off a tune, Hip Hop does it all the time. Anyhoo... yes, The Verve is known to be a one-hit wonder here in the States, but they were never a mainstram act anyway, they just happen to have hits from a very popular album. To the unitiated, their first two albums and early singles sound totally different than Urban Hymns, even their last one Forth is adventurous.

That said... like them or not, Oasis is a musical and cultural icon in the UK (all of their studio albums hit #1 on the UK charts!), no doubt about it. It just goes to show how people are passionate about the discussion of their apparant break-up, whether pro or con. The thing about them sounding like the Beatles seems like a running gag. It's true some songs sound like the Beatles, but most do not. As someone mentioned, Definitely Maybe sounds NOTHING like the Beatles.

Given the history of the band threatening to break up in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if this is some sort of publicity stunt anyway. But anyway... they are a great band, and like most great bands, they will have lovers and haters. I give Oasis props, and I'm more of a Blur fan! But ask me who was the best Brit-pop band, I'll say Suede was.

Anyway, since Oasis apparantly slit up, Andy Bell should really consider reforming Ride with Mark, Steve, and Loz.

Oasis are and always were very overrated. The truth is, at the time of their forced crowning here in the UK the pop scene was full of American Artists , and rightly so , there was this massive backlash here in the uk as we were jealous and bitter that we never had any great bands like Red Hot Chilli , or truly great soloists like Prince , Lenny or MJ .Not sayin' that we never did, but New order was old news, Lennon was long time dead and the rave seen was outlawed. We had these complete dicks like Chris Evans on the radio, yes i mention this dick in particular because anyone old enough to remember this period will know that his opinion add the gullable of the I go out and get pissed and fight every friday night youth = the success of such Arse Fluid as Oasis , Pulp , Spice Girls , Robbie Williams and Blur. None of these Guys hit it big in the U.S. WHY because the U.S had nuff good Music still available and as day follows night **** smells like ****.
So they finally split up oh dear! what a pity! neverf---ingmind. We have so much better to offer , Last shadow puppets , Autechre , Gorillas , Hard -Fi, Klaxons , Roots Manuva , The Whole Broken beat movement , The Dubstep , Jungle Movement . Dont waste your tears on recyclable doodi.......besides on the same day O-Arse-is split up, Public Image Limited stated a possible reformation ....that is God working in mysterious ways.

These guys combined have done enough cocaine to kill Scarface. I'm sure they'll be back together in the morning.

Wow... someone's angry! At the end of the day it's just music, there's so much different music out there, there is something for everyone. BTW, it's spelled "Gorillaz" and the irony is that it's headed by Damon Albarn, who's also in Blur.

As for PiL, I see you're excited about the reformation, but putting in context that you call New Order is old news, wouldn't PiL be as well? To be honest, their last album That What Is Not wasn't very good at all. If Lydon reforms with Wobble, Levine, and Atkins (which hell would freeze over before that ever happens), then that's big news.

Anyway, there's plenty of great bands in the UK to listen to besides the "arse fluid" you've mentioned. I always felt bands in the UK were and still are more exciting than in the US.
