I want to thank ken from alo audio, letting me demo his new released occ(all copper cryo'd 18 guage) and sxc(silver coated copper cryo'd 18 guage) headphone cables!I will forward my initial impressions i sent to ken@alo and vinnie @rwa audio ,then follow up with my impressions, after 1 week of comparing each cable with extended time! ok,here we go!
hi vinnie and ken
i just recieved the all copper occ and silver/copper sxc senns hd800 cables!
wooooooow!! all i can say is i wish we had these cables on hand last friday(my mini headphone meet with vinnie @ red wine audio) i have been listening for 50 minutes so far, 25 minutes on the sxc and 25 minutes on the occ.
my first thought is that the stock cable is a piece of cr_p! and such a mismatch for these great phones! there is more body, less shrill highs on bad recordings! these are still unforgiving phones, however these 2 cables make the bad recordings much more tolerable!
i am really surprised with the sxc! i was expecting the silver in this cable to "BOOST" the already somewhat hot treble! (no chance!) boy was i wrong.there is not 1 drop of harshness to this cable!
the occ copper is wonderful, very musical, not overly warm! it also appears to have a slightly wider soundstage than the sxc,but its too early to tell!
my 1st thought is the sxc is the better of the 2 at this time. BACK TO LISTENING.
OK,now after extended listening, neither one is "better" than the other!
both cables deal with the weaknesses of the stock cable!
it comes down to this! the occ is slightly warmer, and slower in speed(not in a bad way) more of a universal "jack of all trades cable" making poor recordings more tolerable from these very fickle phones! the occ also makes the hd-800 more seductive, which is why these would be my 1st choice!
ok the sxc, these cables are killer amazing with well recorded material!
listening to classical symphonies and jazz with the sxc is magical! the speed and transparency of the sxc is mind numbing! for all you detail junkies out there, the sxc is the 1 for you!
the sxc is also a little more in focus than the occ,it must be the silver in this cable!
in closing, the occ and sxc are both special.its all a matter of taste.
