just got these today. these vintage electrostats came complete in the box, styrofoam inserts and all! in great condition except the pleather earpads are starting to crack from age, and the vinyl coating on top of the cloth headband has flaked off mostly.
hooked them up to a pioneer receiver i had in the garage and.....

very nice! clean crisp sound, blows away even good vintage dynamic headphones. i was execting these to be bass-lite but a little eq goes a long way. they wont boom with bass but all the notes are there and visceral
a few pics:

pineapple was purchased seperately

As is written on the headband, the TK33s are electrets and not "electrostats".
Still, they're a nice find.
I have a pair myself but pretty much only use the adapter box to go with my ATH-9000s as I prefer the twinkling lights on the TK33 box to the original.

An electret is a kind of electrostat.

In as much as they're all headphones, sure.

My TK33 adapter doesn't have all the writing on the side though.

spent some time with these gaming. just awesome. very nice detail, zero harshness or sibilance. the bass is there and plenty of it with a little boosting. good soundstage.

the pioneer receiver pictured above is way too large for my desktop. what is a good compact speaker amp strong enough to drive these? needs to be a good price...

as predeicted the earpads did not last. i took the earpads off of an (unfortunately) pristine pioneer se-2 which were the right size and type. sacrifices have to me made!

The TK33 is actually not an electret, its a back electret. Its literally the opposite of a stat, the bias voltage is on the stators and the signal goes through the diaphragm. This enables the diaphragm to be much MUCH thinner, and the sound comparable to full blown electrostats. Thus, calling it a plain old electret is an insult to both the 'phones and Audio Technica.

I don't think IceClass will accept electrets as anything but electrets, period; even though his stance is in essence like saying the HD 800 is the only dynamic headphone.

Be that as it may, the TK33 doesn't sound like any electret I've ever heard. It's a shame that the back electret principle wasn't around for very long; they're quite good and can be driven from virtually any speaker amp. Even my desktop powered speakers were able to handle it for a while until I got out my old receiver.
