Why can Mick Jagger sing well no more? - Page 2

Sorry to kick and old thread but did you see Mick last night at the Grammys?  That's about as good as you're going to get.  He may have lost some of his vocal range but that is basically the way he's sang live for the past 30 years.  More shouting and dancing than actual singing.  But it's all part of the show.  Hey, they would probably prefer to stand in one place than to prance around the stage but that's not what the audience wants to see.  Imagine a stage filled with Bill Wymans.  How exciting would that be?  Of course it's harder to play while you're moving around but that's part of the excitement of a live show.  You go to Stones show for the excitement not for high fidelity.

Next to Dylan, Jaggar sounds like Pavarratti or Sinatra

That was true in the 60s though.

Ouch.  Though I thought Dylan actually sounded pretty good last night compared to when I've seen him live.

As a side note in the spirit of this thread, I saw Simon and Garfunkel in 2003 (i think it was) and I was amazed by how good Art sounded, especially considering his age.

I think their singing style lends itself to longevity.  They never belted it out lock rock singers.  The worst I've seen is Ian Anderson.  His voice is gone.

Ian Anderson wasn't much of a screamer though.  He had a very melodic voice, didn't he?

He may not have had the best technique, and I believe he was a smoker.

In case you missed the Grammys:

I thought he pulled off a pretty decent performance when I watched it live.  Now that I see it again, it's even better than I remember.  It's got all the Jagger trademarks.  The deep shouty voice, the falsetto, the vamping, the dance moves, the costume.  The only noticeable difference I see between this and some vintage performances are the wrinkles on his face.

For a 67 year old man I though his performance was great. How many other performers of his time can sing and move around a stage as he does? Certainly not Dylan. Barbra Streisand had, by far, the worst performance of the old timers.

I saw the Stones two years ago in Charlotte, NC. They were 65, so was I. They had more energy, enthusiasm and stage presence than I'd seen at concert with performers half their age. Given the opportunity I'll go see them when they're seventy.

I've seen lately David Gilmour Live at Royal Albert Hall DVD , maybe its not so recent, but sincerely I dont think David has ever been better than that..

Damn YouTube took down the Grammy video.  :(

Mick sounded fine to me. Forget his age; he's a world-class performer. Wish the Grammys had recognized the cat who was kicking out the jams with Mick, though. That was my man Raphael Saadiq.

I haven't really concentrated on their live stuff, at least the recent performances.  But his singing on the Exile reissues was pretty damn good, in my opinion.  Can't really get that tone from the 70's back, but dude's got some good pipes for a geezer.
