Beside the SONY X series have the distinguish sound quality, other models of SONY mp3 player seems the same. only different enclosure with different price. This is my personal impression.

I was half expecting to see the S Master Digital amp in all the new Sonys - obviously not

the way it seems to be a DAC, amp etc all in one - you'd think would reduce build costs

I'm fairly certain SQ will remain the same, with only marginal improvements to battery life (42h), screen quality (2.4 QVGA LCD), charge time (2.5h), and price ($160). The speaker/stand is a pure gimmick, IMO.

If you have the older model (S639), I see no compelling reason to "upgrade". I plan on buying the new model only because it's cheaper than the S639.

I've been leaving my 1060 unopened for last 20 days (returns policy of amazon means I can still send back) as I was worried all of the cheap new Sonys would have the S Master Digital amps too

but seems I was wrong

perhaps I'll open it then

It seems that those counting on the S Master amp trickling down into the more basic players will have to go for an X after all.... at least for now.
