What $100 cd collection?

I have a strict $100 budget which I would like to use to buy a small cd collection, hopefully 15-20 cds. I already spent about $7 (my first cd purchase ever) on radiohead's "OK Computer", which I found in a clearance bin at bestbuy, so I'm down to $93.

The other reason I want to stay under $100 is because I'm planning to bring a small cd collection with me back to china when I visit family, if I take too many cds it won't really be practical. Most of my relatives have lived in rural china for their entire lives, so I figure a laptop with a bunch of external HDs probably won't appeal to them as much as a small stack of physical CDs, which are much easier to use (most of them have never used a computer) and are compatible with the ancient cd player that they are already familiar with.

I want to give them a good impression of american music (they're open minded and not religious so don't worry about "offensive" tracks), so I want the genres to be as varied as possible, but since my budget is really limited, I'd prefer to only buy definitive album in their genres.

i.e., I basically never listen to jazz, but I plan to pick up a copy of "kind of blue" because I've heard from friends that it's a milestone jazz album.

anyway, the albums that I'm planning to buy so far are...

radiohead - ok computer ($7)
miles davis - kind of blue (???)
notorious BIG - ready to die (???)
red hot chili peppers - blood sugar sex magik (???)

...and beyond that I'm a bit unsure, especially for genres like classical and country. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Would it make sense to look for a sampler CD? A sampler that has complete full songs/pieces but still a mix. A jazz sampler, a classical sampler, a blues sampler. I don't have any to recommend.

Awesome, thanks for the recommendations!
Do you have any more suggestions for classical music (maybe 1-2 more)? I'm really uneducated in the genre so that's probably where I need the most help

A little variation? Here are a few CD's I recently ripped to FLAC. Either through my girlfriend or ones I have recently purchased. Sorry if they're a little too similar. I mostly listen to various variations of rock.

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Taylor Swift - Fearless
The Aquabats - The Fury of the Aquabats
Primus - They Can't All Be Zingers

Bill Evans Trio - Sunday At The Village Vanguard
Van Morrison - Moondance
The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street
John Coltrane - Blue Train
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus

I can't vouch for the pricing or availability on any of this, but here's what I've been into lately (ymmv, but if you're looking to get into some new genres here's some good starting places)

Kylesa - Static Tensions (slow, churning metal)
Why? - Alopecia (indie/hip-hop)
Ampere - All Our Tomorrows End Today (screamo)
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein (hip-hop)
Pyramids - Pyramids (dark ambient/shoegaze)

Well DavidMahler gave you a solid start

Also, try and get used ones off amazon, in most cases, very good and like new condition discs are in excellent shape and hardly look used. Several of these are very succesful albums and can be had for less than 4-5$ each.

A few more I'd add to the list

Metallica - Black album
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Rush - Moving Pictures
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood
B.B.King - Any compilation album with good ratings is a good bet
Jimi Hendrix - The Ultimate Experience
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Steely Dan - Aja
The Doors - The Doors
Pearl Jam - Ten
Dave Matthews Band - Crash or Before these Crowded Streets
Eric Clapton - Unplugged
Santana - III or Abraxas
Massive Attack - Mezzanine

Lots of fine suggestions so far, Kind of Blue was going to be my lone suggestion... but I can add one more...

Chicago - Chicago Transit Authority

Give them some good American country and roots music:

Live at Folsom Prison, Johnny Cash (this is essential)
Red Headed Stranger, Willie Nelson
6 & 12 String Guitar, Leo Kottke
Look What Thoughts Will Do, Lefty Frizzell
No Depression, Uncle Tupelo
Drag, k.d. lang
And just about anything on Smithsonian Folkways

As for jazz, pick up Time Out by Dave Brubeck. Another monstrously influential album everyone should hear.

For some rock, try Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. If you feel daring, pick up something by Tom Waits or Frank Zappa.

Oh, and if you want some American classical, pick up some Aaron Copland.

While Kind of Blue is great I'd recommend Monk's Mood to most listeners as it tends to be more accessible.
If you're going after Waits, get something with variety- Mule Variations would be my pick.
I'd also recommend Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet which features the amazing banjo work of Bela Fleck and a few songs in Mandarin and traditional American tunes.
Also, Bang on a Can Allstars recorded an album with Kyaw Kyaw Naing that features eclectic instrumentals and blistering percussion (if you're pursuing "world" music).
Best Of collections capture the range of many vocalists: Edith Piaf, Sinatra, Louis & Ella.
Billie Holiday's Lady in Satin is also worth just about any price. So much emotion.
DavidMahler's list was pretty great but I can often skip many of the "classic rock" albums listed by others.

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
U2 - War (although I'm sure more people would suggest The Joshua Tree)
