Underwhelming Debut Albums by Great Artists

A lot of artists are judged by their Debuts and then the quality of their work either stands at that level or slowly decrease........

But there are artists whose debuts are just mediocre or terrible and then they find their nitch......

Case and Point:

GENESIS - From Genesis to Revelation (totally forgotten even by the most devoted of Genesis fans)

There's a lot of bands/artists like this I'm sure. Let's name em

A few off the top of me head:

Radiohead - Pablo Honey
David Bowie - David Bowie
My Bloody Valentine - This Is Your Bloody Valentine
The Beach Boys - Surfin' Safari
Sigur Rós - Von

(agree with that Genesis debut too, BTW)

Wow this was a spot on list!

Would it be fair to add Bleach by Nirvana....I know some people love it, but I don't think it is anything more than mediocre

I was actually considering that along with a few others, but I was going for less-than-mediocre with the debuts I listed above Hehe.

Good choice, but maybe it wouldn't have seemed so mediocre if the mastering engineer hadn't completely butchered it. I've got an uncorrected vinyl copy, and he sounds like one of the Chipmunks. What a disaster.

I'm not sure my nominee actually fits, and it's a fairly obscure band, except to fans of latter-day power pop. The Posies released a couple of so-so records, then dropped Frosting on the Beater on an unsuspecting (and mostly indifferent) public. Great songs, luminous harmonies, nasty guitars. They were never that good before, and they were never that good again.

If you don't know this album, and you like The Raspberries, Big Star, Badfinger, etc., I would strongly urge you to give it a listen!

People can disagree, but with the awesome exception of Solsbury Hill, Peter Gabriel 1 (Car/Rainy Windshield) was not a great predictor of what was to come.

In another vein, after the breakup of Uncle Tupelo. Son Volt released the amazing Trace, while Wilco went with the mediocre (compared to later work, and compared to Trace) A.M. Not lousy, but not a predictor of greater things to come, kinda like Pablo Honey.

Yup, I expected that. It gets great after Fingernails for me.

And I think (see the later post) that Kate Bush's the Kick Inisde is pretty close to the later work . . .

Go figure.

Exactly what I was going to say. They improved by a vast amount on their later albums.
