Updating on a MAC

Just wondered if anyone's got any pointers on running the update setup process on a MAC using OSX, will setup work once I've expanded the .rar file using something like UnRarX, or am I going to have to just do it in XP running on my VMware Fusion emulator Would appreciate any thoughts

5.42

Finally figured it all out! I have the 5.42 firmware installed successfully, and I'm listening now... Doesn't seem much louder to me, but maybe a little. I'm waiting for the end of this track now to see if there are hiccups at the start of the next... Nice. No hiccups, and so far no freezing when changing tracks. Dissapointed overall with the volume because I have it at 31, and it's still not that loud a player with my ESW9's.

Now, I'm worried about the Studio 1. Will it be significantly more powerfull? And, more importantly, will it ever SHIP!?!

I'm not hearing or seeing any differences with this upgrade. Is there a list somewhere of bugs fixed/features changed or added?

I wasn't having too many problems before the upgrade, at least as compared with many on this site.

It still doesn't resume when playing off the card (4 gb card).

The volume is the same. I tried a couple of songs that are very low volume (New York Dolls, oddly enough). Still need to max out to 31.

There isn't any apparent difference in the sound. If I had to guess, it may sound a bit less harsh on the highs and bit warmer overall. But all that may be due to burn in or me just getting used to the player.

I'm actually pretty frustrated, I'm not sure I can hear any increase in volume. There's no reason why my iPhone should drive my cans better than my Amp3. Afterall, it was advertised as not needing a separate headphone amp, and was the major reason I was interested in the first place.

For those of you not hearing an appreciable volume increase after installing FW V5.42, did you reset the AMP3-Pro.2 after the installation? I've always reset the AMP3 after any FW update.

With the FW update on the Pro.2 from 5.41 to 5.42 I do hear a sufficient volume increase to enable me to use HD650 with the Pro.2 directly out of the Pro.2. With the 5.41 FW, and music recorded at low level, I needed to use my iBasso D10 to get that little extra volume to achieve a truly ear-satisfying level with the HD650. I may be noticing the volume increase increment because my critical volume threshhold (with the HD650) falls just above the max volume with 5.41, and just below the max volume with 5.42. Your critical volume threshhold (with phones other than the 650) may be falling above the max volume with both 5.41 and 5.42 - which would render the difference less noticeable between those two FW versions.

I just got back my Pro.1 from a friend to whom I had loaned it, and I'm now using my HD650 with the Pro.1 (V5.31 FW). For a particular track, with the HD650, I can use a volume setting on the Pro.1 (V5.31 FW) which is about 2 lower than the volume setting on the Pro.2 (V5.42 FW) for an equivalently ear-satisfying sound-level from the phones (as determined purely subjectively by my internal ear-satisfaction assessment faculties). Just as subjectively, with the slightly greater prominence of the high end in the spectral mix from the Pro.1, it is my favorite with the HD650. The overall sound from the Pro.1 with the HD650 is: more spacious, more transparent, and having a more lovely illumination of the highs. With the PAA-1 and Sennheiser MX-500, 660 buds, I prefer the Pro.2 for its milder, warmer SQ. I'm really enjoying having both a Pro.1 and a Pro.2.

Update to 5.42 does seem a bit warmer and SQ is good. Didn't check for any volume boost yet, but I always reset after an upgrade.

However, while my nearly full 8GB card with flac works, my 16GB card (15 GB full) does not, with 192k WMA and MP3 tracks). At least it didn't for 10 minutes when I just gave up and reset the Pro2 (it froze when I tried to turn it off).

To be honest I received my map3 pro2 from hisound-uk 3 days ago... so I was preparing the update firmware before I really began to use it...
But today I was playing with it just to get used with the menu interface... and thenFW VERSION 5.42

SO I THINK THE NEWS AMP3 PRO2 HAVE ALREADY INSTALLED THE "NEW" FIRMWARE UPDATE.

PS- I still haven't any music on it... but only radio woom what a sound....
so tomorrow I'll load some musics and tell you about sq.

PS2- How do I load music in the sd card? With it inside the amp3, or in my PC with a usb pen adapter, and put the card on the player?

Thanks

You can load music to your mini-sd card either way, by leaving it in the AMP3 or using a card reader/writer. I have done it both ways.

I conducted a rather interesting experiment comparing the playback of the exact same files, cued up together for the purpose of comparing volume settings between the Pro.1 and Pro.2, both with updated firmware. (US version for the Pro.2)

I discovered, using the same Yuin earbuds, that when the volume of the Pro.1 was set at 19, it took a volume setting of 23 for the Pro.2 to exactly match the volume setting of the Pro.1 (19).

Tonally, they were similar, although I believe the female vocals are just a bit recessed in the Pro.2 and male vocals are somewhat warmer, indicating a slight boost in the mid-bass for the Pro.2.

It was mentioned by a previous poster that while the Resource Manager worked perfectly in the Pro.2, selecting a song from the Music menu resulted in a lockup of the player. This is not the case. Although the screen blacks out, and the controls are unresponsive, the selected tune will eventually begin to play, giving the impression of locking up.

Functionally speaking, it probably should be considered to be locked up, as it sometimes takes 5 minutes or more to begin playing the desired selection, although in every case, it eventually began to play again.

It appears that the player needs to re-create a complete playlist when making a selection from the Music menu. As the Resource Manager works just fine, it would probably be in Hisoundaudios best interests to simply remove "Music" from the menu selection.

I have not yet tried my 16gb card in my Pro.2, but will probably to so tomorrow.

ADDENDUM: I did try my 16gb card that I was using (successfully) in my updated PRO.1 by swapping it with the 8gb card that I was using in my PRO.2.

After swapping cards and rebooting, the player failed to initialize the 16gb card, but after a hard reset and reboot, it found the card and initialized it OK. At this point, it seems like as long as one does a hard reset and reboot after swapping cards, the PRO.2 will perform as expected.

fw5.42 installation troubles with Windoze XP, resolved

I had a rough ride installing 5.42 on my amp3 pro2 (it was running 5.41), but had a good resolution. I'm suspecting others may have problems as well. here is my list of issues:

1. the instructions are very hard to understand, lots of typos and (??) entries (probably another font?)
2. when i extracted the files from the distribution, i didn't get a file called SETUP as described in the directions, but there's a .exe file called hisoundaudio.exe. Apparently, this is the file you run. This discrepancy concerned me when things went wrong later, but it turned out to be of no consequence.
3. I reformatted the main drive on the amp3 as instructed. Not sure if this was necessary since the download app can do this. I used all the default settings and did not change the name from VOLUME.
4. hisoundaudio.exe could not find my player. This frustrated me for several hours. I tried every variation of powering down, unplugging, resetting, changing usb ports, performed a rain dance, etc. No joy.http://www.head-fi.org/forums/images...angry_face.gif Then I found Anadin's post:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f15/am...ml#post6015819
I followed those instructions (power down, push + and play simultaneously for 10 sec, then plug in while still holding the buttons down). Miraculously, the download app then found my player and the download proceeded as expected.
5. After disconnecting according to the instructions, I had to do a reset (with a paper clip) before the player would start again. I put my 8GB card back in and the files are all recognized. I confirmed in "settings" that I had 5.42 running.http://www.head-fi.org/forums/images...s/beerchug.gif

I'm happily listening again. So far, so good. I still have a problem with flac files not appearing in the order is suspect, this may be a problem with my tags. I haven't heard any skipping yet, but I've only listened to a few tracks. Casually, it seems like the volume goes much higher. Setting the volume at 15 is comfortable with my Ortofon 0-ones. Frankly, I'm not experienced enough to comment on any SQ changes with the firmware update. I liked the SQ before and that has not changed.

This was way harder than it needed to be. Thanks Anadin! Although his fix was for Vista, it was needed for my Windoze XP system, which is about 1 year old and has been updated constantly.

STUDIO 1

Craig, did you ever hear anything on the Studio 1? It's late November, and there has been no updates. Are there any details? Rumours? Speculations? Did they install screens on them? And, will it be able to drive most cans without pushing the volume to the limit? I'm ready...

Hey guys,
Now, having had time to have a more serious play with the software update for the AMP3 PRO2, my initial findings are confirmed, that the gain is not hugely improved.
However there IS a higher gain, maybe only one or two notches. For example, the old 31 would now be 29 or 30.
I frequently listen very loudly, pretty much 31 all the time, but that is just a personal thing.
I use the Sennheiser HD485 with the player, mostly on the move. As an aside, I do think this headphone marries up very well with the player.
I do not notice the hiss that others have reported, but that may be down to me or the fact that my headphones are not strictly an audiophile pair. I may notice such things when I graduate to the HD650 around christmas time
I also notice less freezing, but this area could be improved upon, as it does happen, particularly i find, when you change your mind and press buttons in quick succession...
Also, others have reported boot times being slow, but again, my boot time is pretty quick, say 20secs, although i can't say i've timed it.

OK, just to say, i hope my comments are helpful to the members on this great forum.

PS Can't wait for Studio, and I'm sure I'm not the only one

After further listening I agree on the gain being a couple of notches higher. The volume limiter is not a problem on about 95% of my files, so this is not a big deal.

Still wish there'd be resume when coming back from playing on the external card.

FWIW, using Windows 7, I could not get the plus button/center button trick to work. But, somehow I did get 5.42 on it, at least that's what it says.
