Sorry, I don't mean to belabour the subject but I have just come across this MP3 Royalty payment schedule.

The open tab relates to Hardware royalties. My eye went to the Annual Minimum payment of $15,000!!!
Surely it is in the interest of hardware manufacturers to support open source codecs in the hope that the usage gains more widespread adoption. At least do this even they can't bring themselves to actively promote the benefits. Though the reasons why they don't explain the options eludes me too.
The bottom line is that we the customers are paying this levy as part of the hardware and software cost and it is to our benefit for alternative free codecs to gain traction.
Again, my apologies for monopolising an OT subject but I feel it somewhat concludes the issues raised in the posts above.
