virtual surround retention?

Hey guys. While trying to read up a bit more on Dolby Headphone, a thought ran across my mind. While the basic idea of virtual surround sound within headphones is a pretty straight forward concept, i became curious about an idea. Without going into the details I will be blunt. The question regards a very popular DH device, a mixamp developed by astro gaming. The question is this. When a mixamp accepts the optical signal from a consoles toslink connection, it applies the DH, and it outputs through a 3.5mm port on the other side. My question is that, if i were to instead of plugging headphones in this port, but plug a double ended 3.5mm cord into this port, and then fed this 3.5mm to the line in of a computer, and record the output in a program like Audacity, would the wav file created from this retain the same sound as you would have had if you had plugged in the headphones? So let's say I have an ingame clip's audio being fed into the computer through this method, and I had the DH turned off. If i turn it on during the recording, would i get the different sound?

Well as far as I understand it, the output is plain stereo (with some 'effects' to simulate surround sound), so I see no problem with recording that output.

However, I wouldn't suggest doing this with songs.

Btw, what does that box really do? I mean, an xbox has a surround processor onboard, doesn't it? Guess there's also software to achieve the same on a PC. What am I missing?
