I just finished rounding out my classical and opera collection, and I'll probably buy some pop and rock in the coming months.
I'm worried about getting hot CD's, and I was hoping that some people here could help me find what I'm looking for. It's hard finding audiophile grade recordings for mainstream stuff, as the market is saturated with brickwalled recordings.
For new artists, often the brickwalled masters are all that's available. Even worse, the average consumer doesn't seem to care about this issue, and it's almost impossible to tell if a CD is brickwalled by reading the reviews. So when in doubt, I come to the experts. Hopefully some people here can help me out.
I'm looking for some stuff by:
The Rolling Stones
The Doors
The Grateful Dead
Elton John
Billy Joel
The Flaming Lips
Stealer's Wheel
James Brown
Tom Jones
Johnny Cash
Wayne Newton (when he was young!)
Steely Dan
Depeche Mode
Dobie Gray
The Be Good Tanyas
Also, if you really, really like an artist, feel free to recommend them. I love to explore new artists that I haven't heard before. I consider myself a music lover before an audiophile! Also, for the mainstream jazz artists, am I going to have to get some imports, if I don't want hot CD's? I heard the new Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" CD, and it was pretty damn loud.
Also, I'm curious about boxsets for Elton John (the japanese import one), and for the Grateful dead (both live recordings and anthologies). As long as they aren't brickwalled, I'm interested.
Thanks for any help or comments in advance!
