Heavy Metal headphone - Page 2

i'd go with the Grados. have the SR-80s, and they rip **** up. it'll take death, thrash, grind, hardcore etc with no problems whatsoever.

... auditioned it on my cdp playing Destruction's Sentence of Death, and was sold almost immediately. death by guitar indeed.

Thanks for all the comments. I listen primarily to industrial stuff like Godflesh, sludge rock like Melvins and Electric Wizard, as well at the other artists mentioned above.

The Sony MDR-V6's are much closer to my price range than all the other suggestions. I'm sure the Beyer's or the Senn's would give me excellent performance and years of pleasure, but with my pre-order of the Ety ER-6's, I can't spend much more than $100 for a set of home cans, and I just can't swing an amp right now. When I can get an amp, I'll probablly buy a DIY portable from a nice person on the DIY boards and have it double for home and portable use.

I'll give all of your suggestions a listen as soon as I can find a hi-fi store in my area (Westside L.A., any suggestions?)

Keep 'em coming!

P.S. How well will the Ety's re-produce the heavy music I mentioned? Could they reasonably be used at home and away? I'll give them a serious listen when they come in, and maybe a second set of cans for home will be unecessary for the time being.

The one thing that made me enjoy the Beyer 250-80s more than the 831s was my Frontline Assembly collection (and some Leaether Strip), you do NOT want a bright set of cans for anything heavy/thrashy because it -hurts- at high volumes...
I like to crank my FLA up a bit and with the 831s I just couldn't listen to it without wincing even at mid-volume, whereas the 250s are very nice, not painful and very punchy while not being any less enjoyable than the 831s for other listening (IMHO).

I know the 250s might be a bit more than you're prepared to spend, but do watch out for the brighter sets out there because you might find the same thing.
At 80ohms you should be able to use them fairly well without an amp, but they will sound better with one

Just a thought.

Of the newer Grados that I have tried they have been the SR-60 which I own and the SR-225, which are great of the type of metal you listen too.

Soon I will review the MS2 as well which are the Pro version of the Grado SR-325.

cajunchrist - To find a dealer, just try a dealer locator.

www.paradigm.com has one
www.stereophile.com has one

Check out other high end company/magazine sites, and you should find dealerships that way. Last year I discovered a nice high end shop a mile from my house.

for your price range Grab the V6/7506 and get velor pads
bam your' happy
no need for great amps neither

for more expensive

I say 325 because it gives you a very ubrupt close feel with amazing detail

the 600 are a bit more laid back in sound... but gives you even better quality of sound... but you need a proper headphone amp for it....

Even though I listen to quite a bit of heavy-ish stuff (Godflesh, The Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Christbait, early Pitch Shifter, Budd, Corrosion of Conformity) - I don't really use my headphones for this kind of listening. I currently have the Sony 7506s and the Koss KSC-50s. 100% of my listening through these is electronic/ambient and I give the thumbs up for the Koss and the Sony for this purpose. The main reason for this is that I use my headphones at work, and anything other than minimal electronica I find too distracting. Guitar music gets put through the speakers when I am at home so I can jump around, vaccuum etc etc

Now...getting to the point of all this. When I was auditioning, I used a variety of music styles and vividly remember that the Grado SR60s really impressed me for guitar-based music. Don't get me wrong, the 7506s have sounded mighty fine with this style of music the few times I have used them for this purpose, but the Grados really had something special going on that made the guitars come alive in the short time that I had to audition. Can't recall using Godflesh, but the Jesus Lizard sounded better than I have ever heard them sound. You should have seen the smile on my face! I must add that the SR60s were pretty competent with electronic music, but came a bit short with the Mick Harris bass etc - the Sonys edged them out here I felt.

I think if you already have something that is working well for your DVOA and stuff like that, and you want a headphone to use with metal/guitars, have a close look at the SR60 or even the SR80. They are certainly in your price bracket. If you want a more versatile headphone, the Sony 7506s/V6s won't disappoint. The Beyer DT250s sound like a good buy also, but are more pricey I think.

Good luck!

Well, I don't see anyone mentioning the AKG's. Perhaps you might like the 401s or 501s. What's your budget? And do you want noise-cancelation? I'd personally recommend the Grados 225 or 325 since they are pretty well-known here for their capability of playing heavy music.
