Upgrade Button Ghosted

Need some help here pls. I am trying to do a Firmware upgrade on a 40GB Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra. I am doing this upgrade on a Windows 2000 Laptop running SP2 and also Windows MP Version 9.

I have also installed the Creative appropriate Drivers (which all went well) and also Media Source (from the Creative CD) which all went well also.

When I hooked up the player to the laptop the drivers did recognised it and was recognised, but now when I go to try and click on the firmware update button, the Upgrade button is ghosted and cannot be pressed, what am I doing wrong.

This is the link to the Firmware:

Am I missing something ?

Funny this question comes up on the same day I dig out my old Zen NX. If Media Source sees the player you should be able to do the firmware. Maybe make sure the battery is fully charged, mine connects and disconnects repeatedly until there's enough juice in the battery.

Zen NX + HA-RX700 = OMFG!!!!

Sorry but when you say media sourece what are you referring to ? Thing is if the player is switched OFF and I connect the USB cable nothing happens, the PC will only recognise it when the Power button is pressed ON

On my other Zen Xtra (which works 100%) if its OFF and I plug in the USB cable it will straight away turn ON.

Also when ever I do and update re firmware I always use DC wall adapter i.e plug it into mains.

Maybe both your player are no longer supported. Too old.

Maybe this, from your original post:

"Media Source (from the Creative CD)"

The last firmware update is 6 years old. Are you sure you don't already have the most recent update?

Is there a way to check the current firmware version on the player itself?

No it is 100% supported, if you read my post properly I have said and made it clear that I have 2 Zen Nomad Xtra's and my other 40GB one works like a charm with Vista.

But its not the problem I having it working with Vista, XP or 2000. My problem here I am having is that I cannot update or reload the firmware on the player to reload the software onto it, when I go to update the Firmware the UPGRADE button is ghosted this means it cannot be pressed or clicked on.

When I tried pluggin in my other Nomad Zen Xtra to the same PC I was able to update the firmware and the update button wasnt ghosted, but with the one I am having probs with like I said and will say it again, the update button is ghosted.

Little bit harsh, don't you think? Maybe the guy replied to your first post, without having read your next post, which was the one that explained things in more detail. Lighten up.

To tell you the truth, the firmware on it has been erased as far as I know. You see with the Zen Xtra the firmware is actually stored on the HDD and not on a chip like in some later modern players. I bought this player off Ebay not that long ago which was in mint condition plus I also love the zen Xtra's dues to their sound quality, mind you I paid only AUS $35 for it and its a 40GB version. Its condition is immaculate not even a mark or scratch.

What happenes was that the previous owner went to update to the latest firmware and somehow stuffed up (dont ask me how) so he removed the 3.5" HDD and placed it into a USB caddie and reformatted the whole HDD this means erasing everyhting and i am also suspecting Firmware.

So now when ever I turn it ON I get an error msg saying "Firmware Error", also in the firmware there is the OS to run the player. The OS is stuff like Playlists, settings, batt info, track details etc etc. So simply without the Firmware the player is useless.

Now the other funny thing is I have two of these players, the other one works like a charm and I love it but the one that works says on it Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra and the one that does not work says Nomad Zen Xtra but there's no Jukebox wording written on it. So is there really a difference between these two players. They both look the same and they both are 40GB HDD.

IIRC, Creative couldn't get the rights to use the name Jukebox in some European country (maybe U.K.?). If you can determine what country, there might be a specific firmware for that player which would explain why it wouldn't upgrade. You could probably figure it out with some digging. Unfortunately, the best site nomadness.net is no longer up, but you might have some luck at epizenter.com
