New PS3 Slim can bitstream audio

PlayStation LifeStyle » New PS3 Slim Isn’t Slim on Audio Features

Sucks for those of us that have the old system or even worse for me that just bought mine 45 days ago.

Good feature though.

Doesnt matter to me. I get the HD audio signal as LPCM from PS3. I honestly dont think there'll be any difference between converting MA and DTS HD to LPCM in the PS3 natively vs decoding in the receiver, unless your receiver gives you some special options for native decoding which are disabled for LPCM.

But yeah, it would be nice to see the little light glow on the receiver and see MA or HD on the display...but meh....

This is awesome! Main reason that I held off getting one. I'll finally be able to bitstream TrueHD or DTS HDMA to my Onkyo AVR....

Meh, until Sony actually has their games encoded in DD True HD or DTS MA, it's pointless for me. I'd rather pony up for the Oppo BDP-83.

Of course any game that is developed on a PC first, or multi platform, usually has only 4.1 sound anyways, since Creative is literally holding back the entire industry when it comes to audio. Stupid legacy sound ruins it for the rest of us. Don't believe me? Play some games and if you have a multi channel set up, set the receiver to center channel only, and enjoy the silence with most games.

There are tons of games... What are you talking about?

Emphasis on decent games, as dj_mocok said.

Yes. Good ones. I don't want so so games that rely on pretty graphics.

This is why old games are the best.

I dunno, I've been thrilled with the games that I got for PS3 so far. Killzone 2 (great game) and Metal Gear Solid 4 (haven't put in much play time, but I liked what I tried) came with the system. Then GT5 Prologue is amazing and so will be the full GT5 soon. Battlefield 1943 (DLC) is a great multiplayer game... And then theres Fallout 3. The game that has consumed 60+ hours of my life so far and I've barely scratched the surface of the game. I love FPS games and RPG's and Fallout 3 may just be my favorite game of all time.

Will this new version have backwards compatibility with PS2 games?
Considering the price, I doubt it.
No backwards compatibility.

Just like the generation of the "old" PS3 which came before the PS3 Slim. All PS3 models manufactured since the introduction of the now-outgoing 160GB model lack a hardware chip that would have allowed many PS2 games to be played (albeit with software emulation). The first-revision PS3s had full hardware compatibility with PS2 games.

And the biggest reason for the elimination of PS2 game compatibility in current PS3s is that Sony continues to sell the PS2 console to this day (and will not discontinue it until a sufficient number of software developers discontinue the development of new PS2 titles).
