So I did something stupid....

Yeah so, a friend lent me a very old CD and I popped it into my iMac.......the CD would not register so I ejected it and found that the front and the back was covered with a sticky residue and the disc was totally damaged......

I want to know if you think it's possible I damaged my CD drive in my iMac, however....since doing that I've played and ripped numerous CDs in the drive and it seems to be acting fine......

Thanks for your help

I had my new (aluminum) iMac replaced after it messed up a few discs of mine.

The new one seemed fine but has ruined one disc (nothing sticky but lots and LOTS of scratches)- no problems since that one fiasco however. Taking the computer in is a real challenge so I let that one mistake fly.

Let me know if you figure out what the problem is.

If it happened to me, I'd take this as an indication that it's fine

I wouldn't worry too much. If I read that right, the sticky mess was on the label side. You mostly have to worry about getting gunk on the laser pickupnor the motor mechanism. If it's still working, then you're probably fine. Hell, maybe the sticky stuff cleaned some dust out of your drive.

There are basic cd optical lens disks to be had. They are cds with a few fine, short, brush fibres embedded on the top surface. They *are* useful for taking dust motes off the lens, but they won't do anything for more intransigent sticky gunk.

You say you ripped numerous CDs with the drive since then, so the odds are high that it did not take any damage.
So unless it start to act weird I would not worry...

I misinterpreted your original post at first. I thought you were saying that your iMac liquified a friend's classic CD, and were worried that it would also destroy your own CDs. It was a much more exciting thread at that point.

Yeah you should be fine. I misread this at first, thought you lent a friend an old CD, and when you got it back it was ruined, lol
