MSN messenger infected

hey guys.


lately..lot of my contacts on msn have been telling me that they are getting weird 'viagra' 'fat pill' links from me.

seems like my msn is infected and is sending out malware links.

what to do?

i ran virus scan on comp but its clean.

seems like only msn is infected.


any suggestions from expert geeks?

I've had that before..... I forgot how I fixed it exactly. I do remember that you have to do something to your registry.

Try to get a registry virus scanner?

I run three tools to be sure (well the only real way to be sure is to nuke it from orbit....),

Combofix
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Super-Antispyware

Free versions of course. If combofix won't run for whatever reason (usually spyware is killing it) rename the exe, I like random letters.
Run full system scans but before you do that I usually turn off system restore, XP, Vista, since spyware likes to hide in there and scanning your restore points takes too long.

If you really want to kill it Microsoft has three amazing tools:
Autoruns
Process Explorer
CACLs **WARNING** You could easily render your computer unbootable with this program as you can strip permissions from your kernel causing it to delete itself upon reboot. This program is great for removing files that the virus/spyware has locked.

Watch out with these you can really bork your computer up in a hurry.

I of course bare no responsibility for anything that happens to you computer, spyware doesn't like going away quietly sometimes.

I use Pidgin instead of Messenger, I've never gotten a virus but the client is quite unstable. (At least the prior builds)

Run antispyware/malware program like Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and Super-Antispyware, preferably all three because all have their strengths and weaknesses. They take care of spywares and malwares better than antivirus programs.

Pidgin is good, Digsby is another great alternative IM client. I recently switched from Pidgin to Digsby.

Yup, I tried many IM clients, and Digsby does the best job IMO, even though it's technically still in beta. I'm glad I have an early installation .exe of it though, because later installation programs are just riddled with optional spyware/adware that can be installed if you don't tread through the installation carefully.

I still use the Windows Live (on my mac I use Microsoft Messenger) client as there is no way I'm going to get a virus and I only use Windows Live for messaging.
