Radio shows - what gems have you found out there?

I love WNYC - Radiolab which is pretty much the best there is out there in my opinion both technically and host "charma"/voice.

And for any Nordic speaking person I highly recommend Danish Radio's different radio channels podcasts. Especially P3 with shows like:

Ibens Harem which about a wonderful soft voiced 22 woman who has A-list co-host all of which are older males - from top comedians to top politicians (former prime ministers) and the best of the danish speaking music community like the 84 year old Bent Fabricius Bjerre

This American Life

This american life is awesome, I'm also a big fan of the Dianne Ream show on NPR...crazy to hear interviews from people who actually have something interesting to say (as opposed to the usual idiot celebrities). KRTU is also a big jem. I grew up in KC, missouri where jazz was just part of life, and here in SA, Texas...let's just say that it's not a hot item, but these guys broadcast it almost 24/7. Life savers!

Sorry, just my opinion.

You are, of course, entitled to listen to whatever you want. Here's my summary of a typical "This American Nonsense" segment:

And then. (Dramatic pause) As I was walking by the graveyard. (Dramatic pause) Whistling. (Dramatic pause.) Suddenly, (Dramatic pause) in a flash of blinding clarity, it suddenly dawned on me! (Dramatic pause) GOD, spelled backwards...(Dramatic pause)...is DOG.

They constantly beg for money, pointing out that they are "non-commercial," despite that fact that they run commercials. They say they run fundraisers "only ocassionaly," yeah, right.

Gag me.

NPR should just go away. Or at least they should lose whatever public funding they are still able to beg from their remaining idiot supporters in Congress.

I say this as a left-wing liberal.

LOL!

It's funny because it's true.

Regardless, I still enjoy listening to the show.

Music form the Hearts of Space and Echos were good shows for exploring new age/world music. Car Guys was funny the first 5-6 years.

Not sure what kind of radio shows you meant but:

I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue
Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation
Old Harry's Game
Chain Reaction
Saturday Night Fry
Stephen Fry's Incomplete and Utter History of Classical Music

and last but not least

The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy

Mind you, I could list off over a hundred that are worth listening to.

NPR's getting worse these days...

If I don't have my mp3 player hooked up, then I'm tuned into KUSC classical.

Anyone else a fan of The Prairie Home Companion? I've been catching it on weekends for the better part of ten years now. It's also worth going to see live - I've been taking my parents to see it when it comes to LA every June. It's nice to see Garrison Keillor treated like a rock star.

I'm also a fan of Harry Shearer's Le Show.

And even after Dr. Benway's rant, I'll still tune in "This American Life" fairly often. Now, I'm not disagreeing with you. You nailed it... but I still kinda like the show.

I agree with you completely about PHC; some of the routines can sometimes seem a little formulaic, but overall it's smart, funny, and a little twisted. I like that. The show also maintains a link to an earlier era of radio, and to variety shows that might feature comedy, music, and even poetry in the same episode. The fact that they do it live is icing on the cake.

Also, the live music is worth tuning in for all by itself. Where else on the radio dial are you going to hear Mark Knofler and Emmylou Harris perform together? I also like that the music tends to focus on acoustic roots styles -- folk, country, blues, jazz.

Edit: O.K., O.K., so maybe I don't completely hate NPR...

NPR has a lot of great stuff. But I love The Bob and Tom Show. Listen to it all the time.
