Bob Dylan - Modern Times is one such album that immediately springs to mind.

I like Mos Def and was going to get the album the other day but went with something different. I'll have to pick it up next time.
Sounds like you definitely have the patience for this one. It's not the greatest album ever made, but I like it better than anything else he's ever done, and I have them all. It just sounds empty and very alien and hard at first, at least to me. Would very much like to hear your informed impressions if you do pick it up.

When it comes to albums they are just either good or bad and even a few good songs cannot save it from being bad. All that IMHO.
I don't think this is really a one listen album, and you didn't even give it one listen. Now, I'm not for pounding yourself in the head with an album until you convince yourself to like it, but every subtlety of an album can't be processed the first time through, and I think this is an album with a lot of subtle wonders.

It took me several years to hear the merits of Mos's second album, The New Danger, although it still doesn't get much playing time. This one doesn't hit me in a visceral way, either. The hooks and lyrics don't line up like they did on Black On Both Sides, which is why my guess is that most folks won't find themselves singing along with The Ecstatic. The second half picks up some (esp. the Georgia Anne Muldrow cameo "Roses"), but to me, these later discs seem more like art projects than music.

Interesting. To me, "Auditorium," "Priority" and "Quiet Dog Bite Hard" are probably the best tracks on the album and are all on the first half. Slick Rick's cameo on "Auditorium" is riveting. I listened to The New Danger at least a dozen times and could never get into it. I always thought Black on Both Sides was over-hyped.

I remember meeting Mos Def outside Spaceland in Silverlake before he became famous, back in the mid-90s. He was handing out flyers for a show he was doing the next night. Very cool and friendly dude.

Agreed on this.

The thing that remains is that I have be impressed with what I hear at least a little bit to give an album another shot. I have to have that ''Hmm, this could be interesting." idea about it. The Ecstatic simply doesnt do this with me.

When it comes to rap I am very critical so not much stands a chance when I let lose my verdict

True dat…but then, how could a Slick Rick cameo not be dope? He's the kinda MC who's always gonna sound great on other people's records.

It actually sounds from your earlier post like you maybe had a more visceral negative reaction than simple disinterest? It's the records that give me the former feeling, as opposed to the latter, that I am usually drawn to play over and over, until I can identify and screen out what is irrelevant in my own critical response, as the scholars say. This is work, but I am in this for more than just instant gratification. And some challenging records just simply never satisfy. I am not plugging The Ecstatic -- because it's clearly not a record for everybody, or, I'm willing to concede, maybe hardly anybody -- just responding to your post.

And then there's The Ruler's Back, on which he also sounds great. Yes, I love that one.

Sorry! My communication skills are sometimes lacking. I was just trying to say that I listen to an album more if I really don't like it than if I'm simply bored by it. Makes for a fun existence.
