Any ESW10jpn owners in Seattle area? - Page 2

Uglyrain,

I purposely did not bring up any seller identification at this point as I didn't want to falsely accuse anyone of selling fakse. I bought these off ebay knowing full well that at $360 they weren't going to be perfect in origin. I suspected factory seconds or the like, and I was actually ok with that as long as they sounded good as I intend to use them for listening not artwork.

I have been listening to them while working crazy hours last night, and as they break in, they *are* sounding amazingly good. At first they were only so-so, but with some break-in they are now easily blowing away my SennHeiser PXC450s (noise cancelling off) and my DT770s. My suspicions at this point is that these are possibly built with real AT components, although I've never seen high end wood ATs in person, and the cups don't seem to live up to the standards that people mention here, however, I'll know for sure when my second pair arrives to compare.

Of note: with some more googling last night, it looks like the carrying pouch mine came with are from ESW9. The headband also looks like the ones from ESW9 photos. I wonder if these are built with some ESW9 components, and then have some fake ESW10 cups on them?

At any rate, I'd be very surprised if they are the ones I saw for $30 as the sound quality is actually very good.

One thing that looks different is the plastic encasing on the mini-plugs. The picture from Audio-Technica's Japanese website (http://www.audio-technica.co.jp/prod...-esw10jpn.html) shows a small inward recess where the plastic meets the metal. The mini-plug in your photo (http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/8679/img2234o.jpg) is straight all the way.

Yup, that certainly looks different. I'll look at that detail when I get the new ones side by side. Hmm. Looking at ESW9 pictures, the ESW9 has the same shape to the plug as mine. I'm going to open up one side and look inside the cups early next week. My pet theory right now is that the ones I have maybe some variant on real ESW9s with fake cups, although the seller says that he compared them to ESW9s and thought they sounded better, and unfortunately I don't have ESW9s at hand to compare them with.

Ok so I have received the real ones. The fakes are good, but they do not look to me like they came from the same factory. The real ones have a substantially more quality feel and lots of differences that show up in a side by side. Not to mention they sound considerably better. I'll work on getting photos and other side by side impressions up as the day goes on. I guess I should probably start a fake esw10 thread.

BTW - on the cord end ... The real ones that showed up today have the exact same end, so there may be a production variance on that and so that isn't nescesarily a give away.

Not to deviate the thread but has anyone had any experiences with the ebay seller "JITHK"? Is he legit?

As to JITHK if you do a search there are a number of people that post positive feedback, although I don't have any personal experience.

I have started a new thread on the comparisons of fake vs real, so it shows up more easily for more people:
