Beyerdynamic to launch new top headphone at IFA -- called T1 - Page 50

I've placed an order for the T1s (a couple of days ago), now I can't wait to hear them!
My initial planning was to use my LD MKVII to drive them, as I alreay have a balanced 250ohm DT880, and it's a match in heaven.
So I asked Drew by MoonAudio to reterminate with a 4 pin connector.
Thing is I have no idea how the amp will sound with a 600ohm impedance headphone... and people here have started talking about a tube amp...
I'm not a tube guy, I prefer neutrality and detail over sound stage and 'warmness', and also I don't like spend my money in tube rolling.
So my question is: shall I keep my initial planning to balance the headphones and use the MKVII, or leave the stereo jack, and look for a tube amp? In this case, any cheap ideas? Budget $500. Thanks for your help!
At the same moment ask Drew to include a 4 pin to 1/4 in. adapter, this allows some cheaper experimenting later on down the road (meets etc.). See what it costs, shouldn't be that much. Try it with the current set-up...if it flips your pancake doesn't matter anyones opinion. It offers (the T1) much different performance over the 250ohm 880 (which I didn't particularly care for). I prefer clarity and the focus with extension Great Solid-State offers also! How much output will your amp offer into the stated load and sensitivity of your new Beyer?

Thanks achristilaw for your quick reply. I can't find the power output of the MKVII on 600 ohm, it's 2W per channel on 120 ohm and 0.8 on 300 ohm, so it should be 2x400mv on 600 ohm, which I admit is not much :-(

Well if you don't need the headroom (for Classical) and listen at average levels.....could be? Running balanced offers some advantage and stability. Whats the fellas name from LD..Dave? I forget...ask him!!

The T1 has a max power handling of 300mw. Your amp seems to be able to put out 400mw at 600 ohms.

That means that in theory your amp should be able to drive the T1 loud enough to put holes in your ears. So don't worry too much about your amp.

Hello, Any comment about T1's "outside-the-head localisation"?
@achristilaw: I've just sent an email to David: we shall see..Probably will suggest me to upgrade to the MKVI, LOL! I'm not much into classical music, I listen to small jazz ensemble only (trios, quartets) so the soundstage is not my first priority

Good to hear the T1 has landed. Thanks for the initial impressions and look forward to the post-burn-in reviews.

achristilaw, would be interested to hear what qualities the T1 resembles with your lineup of phones--lush mids of the AD2000, dynamism of the JH13, bass response of the LA7000, etc.

Lastly, for trance, dance, hip hop genre listeners, which phones do you prefer and why?

VERY well said. PLEASE folks, don't take anyone's right out of the box comments, mine or anyone else's, as the true report on the T1. This will take quite some time to formulate. All that can be said right now is it's a good headphone. HOW good will take time, both for break in, and then for extended listening.

When I did my HD800 review, I broke in for a week, and then listened for 3 weeks, before writing.

Skylab, so far(if possible), does T1 > DX1000 overall?

I'm not sure. Probably. But I haven't compared yet. I did do a little comparo yesterday between the HE-5 and the T1, and the T1 is already a step above the HE-5.

The thing about the DX-1000 is that they are very special. They are NOT the last word in neutrality, as people who have heard them know, but they have a special quality in making music. It does make comparing them to a headphone like the T1 a little tough. The T1 *might* have that rare ability to be a technically impressive headphone that also stirs the soul. But again, it's early.

---------------------------

After 24 hours break in on my T1's, the bass has extended nicely in depth. The treble has also extended, and there is a little shimmer now that I felt was missing yesterday. But I still think that there may be more to be gained here, and I wouldn't mind either, as long as the bass stays this tight, and the treble doesn't get edgy. It's not at all edgy right now, just very clean and clear, and I am hoping it will stay that way.

Interesting to hear about this apparently very obvious lack of detail. Kind of goes counter to expectations. Tuned in for more reports...

NO NO - that is NOT what I am saying at ALL. It's not a lack of detail! That's very different. It is a *slight* lack of top end extension - this comes across as a little less "air" at the top than I would expect - but it's already getting better.

Someone confuses a particularity of the frequency response for a lack of detail, someone else takes this to be a universal property of the headphone, and soon nonsense becomes a fact. No thanks. I'll wait til more impressions are out before jumping to conclusions about it.

Yes, that's exactly how I feel! I keep coming back to the DX1000 and accept it's foibles, especially that slight midrange "honk". But the one thing is does have and it has in spades is soul. Will be very interested to read your longer term T1 impressions as you seem to feel the same way as I do about the DX1000 and HD800.

GOOD IDEA - this is what I have been suggesting. And why I was hesitant to post any initial thoughts, but I gave into pressure to do so
