Beyerdynamic to launch new top headphone at IFA -- called T1 - Page 199

Thanks for the impressions. Strange that you would go from your Beta to the M^3 Asr. May I ask which opamps you're using?

Mine looks like the one below, strange that there are differences.. Mine is #1404

Asr - No there was no hair on the driver, totally clean when I got mine direct from Beyer. T1 seem to need fair amount of burn-in so hang in there and see what happened.

snejk - My pair is 1795 so may account for the changes.

musicman59 - Looking forward to your V100 review!

Mine is No. 1495. They are ok but when i unpack them i find a large amount of  small black "hair" on the cups? Its not actually hair but from some material. They were not clean out of the box.

But there is another thing that bothers me. Build quality. When i compare them to my DT880 they dont look so great put together as DT880?

Anyway they do sound great.

Now I know what you talking about, I think those are fiber from the box black packing/ cushion material. The drivers didn't have any on it, very clean, but there is a litttle (not much at all) on the outside (on the cup near grill and hinge).

Mine is pair 1415 and I had it recently, and it was completely clean and smelt brand new material out of the box, so I guess the music store had it for a while and didn't use it as a showroom pair fortunately.

Oh I certainly intend to find out if the T1 will benefit from a re-cable to balanced. :)

My M3 is the one on this page where the op-amps are noted as AD8610: http://www.rockhopperaudio.com/store/2009/11/15/sold-balanced-m3-for-sale.html

I confirmed the "hairs" on my T1 were actually the synthetic fibers from the material inside the case. A poor choice of materials on Beyerdynamic's part, IMO, as these fibers will get onto the T1 every time it's placed back into the case.

The so-called case is also the worst case I've ever seen due to its lack of a handle. What's the point of a case when there's no handle?!

Setup is Plinius CD-101 with Rockhopper Balanced M3 in unbalanced mode (my reference dynamic amp of the past few months).

I've previously heard the T1 at a meet. Listening to it again at home is obviously more useful. It's a fine-sounding headphone but like the HD800 before it, initially I'm underwhelmed and I think it sounds pretty average. Not bad, but not great, and like I expected, it's mostly just a different flavor compared to my other dynamic headphones (Qualia 010, Grado HP2, Audio-Technica AD2000, JH13). I previously said in another thread that I didn't think the T1 was similar to the HP1000/HP2. It turns out they both have one thing in common: when I listen to either of them (the HP2 or the T1), for some reason I wish I was listening to the Stax OII MKI instead. :p

I'm finding it a bit hard to actually like the T1 so far, as I've gotten used to both the HP2 and Stax OII. The T1 seems to lack the "living soul" sound of the HP2 and the combo of dynamic range and impulse response of the OII MKI which is sort of depressing. :(

A couple of things that have nothing to do with sound: (1) there were LOTS of tiny pieces of hair on the driver housings that I saw as I pulled the T1 out of the box. I cleaned up most of it but there's still a little bit left. Anyone else run into this? (2) I also looked at the driver assembly in the inside of the earcups and compared it to my Qualia 010, as I noticed it was similarly angled. Seems to me that the Qualia 010's driver is at a slightly wider angle. The Qualia 010 also has a significantly larger driver "chamber" and has the drivers further away from the ears.

 Hi Asr

Too bad I read this after I placed my order.  I find that I usually agree with how you hear things.

Asr, having the BHSE driving the O2Is I understand the O2 sound nice:-) But have you given the T1 the privilige of having one of the worlds best dynamic amps to drive it? Also how does the T1 compare to the HE-5?

Lol you are right about that, the exterior of the case is nice but it still is not the nicest case I've seen. I've seen better, but also far worse even for more expensive cans. I guess this all has to deal with the luxury status of the T1 and not any practical aspect.

No handle necessitates careful handling, with both hands, of such a highly esteemed object; for example, think of a box for storing fine silverware.   Also, Chinese teacups have no handles, adding to their profound ceremonial value.

Here we seem to be considering a truly "worst case" scenario!  : )

Agreed on the issue of the velvet material, maybe Beyer should have chosen a better velvet material with fiber that doesn't come off. However, although the case doesn't have a handle, I wouldn't say it is the worst case I have ever seen. Most other headphones (say HD800 and PS1000) only have cardboard box etc as oppose to a sturdy metal box. I am sure O2's case is better but that phone cost £1.5k which is nearly double the price of T1....

The case seems very suitable for storage or shipping, but I plan to use my DT880 leather case if I carry the T1.
