My speculation, and for me personally, is that it has something to do with the very boring and gaudy design. The chain link backside to the cups is just bling hideous IMO, and the fact that it looks like a slightly nicer version of every one of their other models makes me yawn and say meh. Seems to me like they put very little effort in to designing their new flagship.

I won't be spending $1000+ more than a DT770/880/990 simply for a different driver.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Beyerdynamic Tesla T1
Sennheiser HD 800 Headphones

Would you please explain how you know this to be fact? Have you had a chat with a Beyerdynamic engineer or had the opportunity to go over their books to confirm that no R&D was spent? Please tell - I am very curious about your insider knowledge.

You do know that if there is a new driver, the cups will have to be engineered for them. Maybe the external styling looks similar to others, but I guarantee you that the internal design had to be adapted for new drivers. Likewise, you don't know if they used any new materials or not.

Unless, of course, you have an inside source telling you that they're recycling the same exact parts. Or do you work for Beyerdynamic yourself?

Despite the scarcity of information on these headphones, I anticipate they will be amazing. It seems they will need to be well amped at 600ohms. Regarding speculations about what cups they're using, its tough to tell. All I know is I can't wait.

Hopefully the T 1 won't have such a horrible impedance roller coaster like the HD 800, but a quite balanced curve like the DT 880/250.

Too many people are speaking out of their ass that's why.. Way too critical & cynical for such a new statement headphone with so little info.. From, the, it's a HD800 knock off, to, they need to change the look, cause it looks like the 770/880/990.. It if has their comfort, the T should.. & of course, like the HD800.. It's over priced.. Beyers is trying to play David Copperfield here, & make us pay so much for what is merly a iullussion..

Seems like a very subtle design to me.
I personally think that the design is quite elegant for a full sized headphone, and elegance to me is much more important than an "all new", overcooked design like that of the HD800. I appreciate the comfort, strength, and fit of this design very much, and am happy to see it being used in this new phone. Of course, what I like isn't always what others will/should like (as proven by people who buy Skull Candy), but I honestly can't see whats wrong with the design of this latest headphone.

Now I'm only waiting for the cable discussions....

OMG
head-fi has turned into fashion-fi

Who the hell cares how they look?if they will sound amazing than that what is important...

... because design has consequences.

ROFL, so most people are "oh the HD800 is an ugly sci-fi looking headphone made of cheap spray painted plastic". So this Beyer has a similar look to previous Beyer models and it's all "oh they're just using the same boring housing again, they must have cheated a whole lot out of R&D costs". What the hell are manufacturers meant to do then? Maybe everything needs to look retro but with a 100% metal structure?

They can't make the housings to the exact specifications of every single buyer. As for price, we don't have a clue how much they make on these things, but personally I'll leave it up to my ears to do the judging on price performance ratio. It seems there are more people here that don't want to even try it because they think they're being ripped off than people who are actually exciting about something new.

I think they'd have the sense to not do that. Ridiculously heavy headphones FTL.

Or they could offer a couple of cup sizes as part of the MANUFAKTUR service for a truly custom fit.

@techfreak, that would likely require large amounts of R&D, more manufacturing equipment, time, employees, and all the associated cost just to make the headphones better fit the small portion of the population that experiences slight difficulties with them. I really don't understand why so many people are suggesting changes to Beyer's design. On a similar note, I wonder how many of the people complaining about the design actually own a pair of Beyers...

they even got tons of german PDF's where it seems clear that regular headphones really send a hell lot of EMI straight to your brain and ears..

I spend a lot of time w/ headphones on my head, I hardly ever use cellphones coz I hate them...and I end up w/ far more brain frying frequencies than if I were using one!

and now, they make super-magnets! I can't stand the Ultrasone sound, so I guess I'm SOL on this one
You can actually get sheets of mu-metal pretty cheap and glue them on any headphones for emf shielding. There might be better materials with less acoustical impact as well. According to the people who think emf is dangerous, super-magnets isn't anywhere as dangerous because it is static (ie. earth) vs. alternating current (ie cellphones). But in many places people are saturated in that kind of radiation anyway so what you get from most headphones is probably negligible.
