This policy does NOT encourage further Manufaktur purchases and drives owners to aftermarket manufacturers.......which results in lost sales revenues to Beyerdynamic. I luv Beyer headphones - but, Beyerdynamic insists on doing things to their own detriment.
Maybe Beyer actually cares more about all its customers and less about satisfying the desire for "exclusivity" for a select few customers? It drives me nuts when manufacturers start playing this game of restricting new and replacements parts to prop up a certain business model (e.g. inkjet printers) that actually turns away consumers.

Also, I doubt the sales of these things (headbands, earpads) is really something that has a major effect on Beyers bottom line.

This. Beyerdynamic themselves have stated that the DT770's is one of the greatest money makers for them. They also make a lot of money via business contracts tbh.

IFA

Aw shucks! The IFA is an hour and a half from my house...well, at least my friend can get me in free as a distributor's guest! Finally, a perk to living in Germany! I'll take pictures!

Oh come on guys. I'm surprised no one is upset over this design. Yes we all just love to see a new flagship and sound is most important but it's basically the same headphone as the last three or four models with a new driver. So you are paying a $1000 for a new set of drivers. Kind of like buying Grados. At least with the HD800 you are paying for a all new headphone even if its quite ugly.

Any toes left I haven't stepped on?

spencexxx, hopefully youve heard HD800s and other Beyers, please let us know the best evaluation you can!

they even got tons of german PDF's where it seems clear that regular headphones really send a hell lot of EMI straight to your brain and ears..

I spend a lot of time w/ headphones on my head, I hardly ever use cellphones coz I hate them...and I end up w/ far more brain frying frequencies than if I were using one!

and now, they make super-magnets! I can't stand the Ultrasone sound, so I guess I'm SOL on this one
Hmm...

this is pure ********. Marketing speak. They actively play on your fears to sell these phones. The potential harm in electromagnetic radiation is widely debated, but there is a strong consensus that it isn't harmful.

Who cares! They cant sell a commercial item that would harm you to that extent, it would be ridiculous. I am excited for the claim of it having more pressure than any other. Im sure it will rock our socks even at low volumes.

I hate change just for the sake of being new so I'm fine with Beyerdynamic working with a proven chassis. It's part of the reason I respect Apple's industrial design.

Obviously the new driver doesn't cost $900 to manufacture, but Beyerdynamic didn't just wish it into existence either. I'm sure countless hours of r&d and iterative prototypes went into its design. These things cost money. I'm also willing to bet that as with other high performance products tolerances are a lot tighter. That has a cost to it too.

I don't have a problem with the styling - it looks fine to me. The current DT880 is comfortable, so why mess with success needlessly? Reading their press release, besides developing a new transducer it appears they also changed the shaping of the earcups for the acoustic baffle to better follow the contour of the outer ear.

I think it's just a fancy way of saying the drivers are somewhat angled like HD800 or other headphones before it.

All right, I cant wait to make a pair of darth beyers out of these.

Must say that I prefer the design understatement of beyer than the over-over-over-design statement of the latest sennheiser's, at least I know I wont look like im in a sci-fi B movie while Im wearing them. However, Im sure that beyer could've put a little more effort in the design of these ones....

Are you kidding? The DT880 is one of the most comfortable and well thought-out designs on the market. I wouldn't be happy if they had changed it - going with success is always a smart option.

These look similar to, but not identical to past designs. I'm sure it required new tooling, etc. as well as the new drivers. They aren't just putting new drivers in the same housing. It's a new housing with styling cues from previous designs. There's nothing wrong with that.

Though I had been hoping they'd carry over some design cues from the DT48. Those machined aluminum cups are in the same league as the Grado HP-1000.

Sure I understand that and I can appreciate if it works than don't fix it. Of course there are slight variations so retooling is needed. On the other hand no time and money was spent on R&D. No need to test materials, size and shape for the best sound. Just that I believe would run in the millions if perfection was the goal. So why not pass the savings on to the consumers. That is why I think the retail price is even more ridiculous than the HD800.
