Best portable? advice needed

I am a newb, but I am in the process of putting together (what i think will be) a killer portable set-up.

I have just ordered an RSA P-51 mustang, and am planning on ordering a set of JH-13's before to long.

this brings me to my source. I currently own a 32g Ipod touch 2g- and a 32g ZEN. I really like the touch as an interface and handy web browser, and I enjoy the sound out of it more as well, but I have yet to try loss-less files from the ZEN. to me the ZEN has almost no depth or sound stage if you will, even on my 320kbs tracks.

I am in the process of upgrading most all my ipod music to loss-less, and i think it sounds "ok" though my current gear. But i have not seen many, if any, posts raving about how good the touch is, i get the impression that it is considered mediocre as a source.

Other than a modded 4-5th gen ipod classic, is there a portable player out there (music quality and user friendliness being the main criteria, in that order) that is generally considered to be "very good" or "reference"?
Thanks, Joe

Seriously, the last time I was dancing in my chair and shaking my head to the music like this was with my full Bedside Rig. I am totally loving how it can ROCK without for a moment losing its cleanness. Abundant bass, without even a smidgeon too much or too anything. Highs like a surgical scalpel - capable of carving out any effect the artist wields them to produce without introducing any distraction or artifact of their own that I can detect. And mids that just pull you into the music and don't let you back out - not even after the music stops. And everything clean, clean, clean and as abundant as my ear has ever wanted.

If the sound weren't so addictive, it would be so very, very satisfying. Actually, I can stop listening any time I want to. I just don't happen to want to, ... ever! ;-) j/k again... I kid... I'm a kidder.

AMP3 is a hybrid which integrated with a DAP/AMP/and a freebie hifi earphone. At least AMP3 could be works as a superior DAP+ preamp for some other amp. This kind of set up have been proved very very perfect by many headfiers. please have a look at this post:

Commented by Hiflight:

IMO, the SQ of the AMP3 ranks among the very best available portable DAPs and exceeds that of many non-portable setups costing many hundreds of dollars more.

Commented by Average JOE:

I do think the AMP3 sounded better than other amps I listened to at Can Jam including RSA stuff and the E+

Wow, thank all, much apriciated, I was looking at the AMP3, but a little woried about the UI and features. as for the modded ipod, that looks very interesting as well, so can the latest gen ipod be cleanly moded, or do i have to find a used (gag) older one to mod?
After doing a bit more research I think I have it boiled down to either the AMP3, S9, Sony10xx, modded ipod.

If the AMP3 is that much better I may just say screw the bells and whisles. I will look into it a bit more.

Thanks again guys,
Joe

While the AMP3 is a very good DAP/AMP/FM, it is not suitable to use as a DAC/Preamp, as there is no output to an external amp other than using the headphone jack.

There is an input, allowing use of the amp with other sources but not the other way around.

If you wanted to run the headphone output of the AMP3 to another amp, I suppose you could, but I fail to see the point in that as the quality of the AMP3 Class
A amplifier section is arguably better than that of most other players currently available for portable use.
