While look for a small format and basic preamplifier, I came across the Pro-Ject Box Design Components and decided to give their Dock Box a try.
I just got it today. It will work only when powered with the supplied adaptor.
When plugging my iPod in and plugging it out from the Dock, there's static type interference that reaches my HeadPhone amp, creating that characteristic grating sound. Once connected, things sound fine. I can't really here a difference between the sound quality from the Dock and that of a direct LOD cable that I purchased from AudiophileProducts.
Does that sort of static interference bode well? Should I ignore it and get on with enjoying myself or is there something to be concerned about? I've never experienced this with a Dock, though this is the first power dependent dedicated dock that I've used.
